G00G00MUCK Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 Hello, I have been asked to block a student from all teams chat and messaging. We set up a policy some time ago for just this purpose, and it worked fine. But now it appears to be totally ineffective. Student accounts with the policy applied can still reply to chats in teams etc. I can see the Disabled Messaging policy is applied and is the effective policy. But it is having no effect. I've tried searching for clues, but keep finding page after page of instructions on how to apply the policy. Which I know how to do. But nothing about ineffective policies. Just wondering if any of you have had similar issues or heard about any updates affecting policies? Thanks in advance for any input.
Olliedawg Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 I've had to disable chat in the past also.. currently have 3 students with this policy applied as they cant be trusted with it. Teams admin center > Messaging > Messaging Policies > New Policy I basically disabled everything in this section, besides the report concern option. Is the policy applied to a group, or is it user based? I do mine on an individual basis & haven't had any problems.
TriggerHappyUK Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 We had this issue too. As far as I can remember, there are two types of chat in Teams. I classed them as Global Chat and Team Chat. It looks like you have disabled the Global Chat - This stops the general chat function. But there is also a chat function per Teams lesson/class/meeting - This can be disabled in the team/meeting options.
G00G00MUCK Posted February 6, 2024 Author Posted February 6, 2024 Hi Olliedawg. we do exactly the same thing. A seperate custom messaging policy with everything turned off except the report options. Applied to individuals. We had one student still listed as having the policy applied. And I remember it working when we applied it some time ago. That student has since left. But now when I apply the policy to a student account it has no effect. I am testing it with a test student account, and apparently the policy is applied and is the "effective policy". But I can still reply in Teams etc.
Olliedawg Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 Have you checked TriggerhappyUK's suggestion? Worth a look.. however this policy alone for me blocks it entirely, as i had complaints from one teacher saying the student couldn't respond to them in a private chat about classwork
G00G00MUCK Posted February 6, 2024 Author Posted February 6, 2024 (edited) But there is also a chat function per Teams lesson/class/meeting - This can be disabled in the team/meeting options. Hi Triggerhappy, the Messaging Policy should be effective on all chat, messages and meetings, for the account it is applied to. So should be a blanket setting to mute troublesome accounts. We could use the mute option within individual teams. But the owners of these teams don't seem to be monitoring them effectively. So a blanket ban is called for. Edited February 6, 2024 by G00G00MUCK
Jawloms Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 From my experience, applying the policy will stop users starting new chats. It cannot stop them replying to existing chats they already had ongoing. Is that what you're seeing?

But I'm sure it worked previously. Or maybe I am going mad! -
