Would just like to ask a question regarding Internet options.

 

Is anyone out there using Starlink for their business or school Internet ?

I've literally just took delivery of one and about to go set it up. To be used by 1 cabin with 4 people in.

I used it for an event on a 4 week mini contract through bytesdigital last summer and it was pretty good - we used it in conjunction with a fairly large (80 APs) Unifi mesh system for staff systems and exhibitors.

 

We got a consistent 80/50 connection with around 20-40ms latency which was fine for ticketing systems, card transactions and general internet. We did have to restrict a bit to stop people from trying to stream sports!

 

We've been told that EE/3/Vodafone will all have 5g coverage of the site by August, so we're looking at renting a Mushroom bonding appliance instead.

It would not be my first preference down to cost, 4G/5G would be what I would look first, its a fraction of the cost and in the right area can deliver good enough speeds but if signal is your issue and no wired or you need portability then it would be my next option. It's cheap compared to what similar services used to cost, I've not heard anything bad but not personally used it. I follow alot of van lifer type channels online or those off grid and many switched to using Starlink rather than having multi sim routers, costs the same but better speeds.

 

They are doing refurbished hardware at a steal compared to new at the moment, if the monthly cost wasnt sky high I would have got one then paused it but at £80 a month or what ever I cannot justify it. Will stick with my 4g but please let me know how you get on with it.

It's my primary internet connection. I work from home but we also install in schools as interim connections.

 

4/5G is great, but I don't even get phone signal, and my ADSL is 8Mb. Starlink smashes it out of the park.

Thanks all for the replies. Very interesting. The reason I asked, have a few small schools in rural areas who cannot get good Internet coverage at all and ISPs telling them they need to buy a dedicated line which costs £4k a year. They simply cannot afford this. Other than that, speeds they have been provided with are up to 50mpbs !!! Wondered how Starlink worked and if it is an option.

Oh it's an option. It's patchy in some areas, but to be honest I get solid connection in Lincolnshire, around 200-250Mb down and 50Mb upload.

You can rent one for £85 atm, buy one see if it does what need it to do

 

You can also buy priority ones with better speeds if needed but obviously more dollar

The lack of alternative coverage was why we went for it for our event - we were bringing hundreds of extra people into a rural location where only EE had any 4g coverage and it was a single mast. We approached them and they told us that they would not warrant it's performance.
