Parents and Teams

Hi all,

 

Wondering if anyone else has come across the same issue that we're having.

 

We've recently enabled 2FA for all students in Office 365 for outside school, but it's come to light that a member of SLT/HOY has told some parents that they should make their kids share their Office 365 password with them so they can check on their Teams account for homework etc. So now we have parents logging into 365 before the kids and setting up 2FA to their phones, and now kids are complaining they cannot login.

 

Does anyone know if it's possible to add parents to Teams? Or is it a case of telling parents they shouldn't using their kids accounts and sharing password.

Kids should be being told not to give their passwords to ANYONE. Parents, teachers, other pupils, that dodgy uncle, the Police, CIA, MI6 or Jason Bourne. Anyone saying otherwise is undermining years of work to help people secure their digital lives.

I'm not aware of a "parental access" for Teams. There is usually an app like Go4Schools, Edulink, ShowMyHomework etc where the homework is set and marked complete which they would usually have access to.

But Also, are you attempting full 2FA to avoid students interfering with each other's work on site or would a conditional access policy to disable it whilst on the school site be acceptable to what you are trying to achieve?

There is a conditional access rule for 'registering security information' that you can configure to block access unless the user is accessing from a trusted location. This will stop parents setting up MFA at home but it does mean students will need to do it in class. Edited January 10, 2024 by NegativeKillDeath

There is a School Connection Beta Program running currently where they are testing parents being able to log into their own personal teams to be able to view their child's homework (assignments).
