ICT_GUY Posted February 6, 2024 Author Posted February 6, 2024 Well its still going strong. It is blocking around 32% of dns queries as being Adverts or survalience traffic. It is blocking this on our main network and BYOD network. No issues so far reported apart from noticeably fewer adverts on websites. It is not 100% simply because some sites host adverts within their domain. Its still at only 20% memory usage and negligible cpu usage. It is currently blocking 700k domains.

It's been happily blocking 1.7M domains with only 512MB RAM for years. No worries about killing SD cards and you could even enable replication for complete Pi-overkill! 1

When it dies ill swap out for a high use one rather than the extreme one thats in there. It does a pretty decent job of reducing adverts on the whole school network with over 500 machines. Davit2005 Posted January 29 Posted January 29 (edited) At home I have 2 PiHole's running as a VMs, does not necessarily need to be on a Rasp Pi 🙂 I did originally have it running as a docker container but I too had database issues so jus put it on it's own debian VM now. I also run 2 Cloudflared containers for DoH on separate ProxMox nodes with VMs running docker. I prefer having dedicated VMs running docker then can split up containers that need privileged access from those that do not. Edited January 29 by Davit2005 1
synaesthesia Posted January 29 Posted January 29 Very good to hear! I had a play with Pihole at home but ultimately decided on using opnsense instead so I could just get rid of my awful sky router. Same plugins pretty much and work wonders, even with the pesky ads in mobile games! 2

TBH I've never used an ISP router, even when I was with Cable & Wireless, NTL, BT or Virgin. 1

Just have to put some information in the username & password for the connection but it's just generic random fluff so it isn't blank. So far it's more stable than the Sky router ever was! Ours used to crash every week and need a restart, a replacement did the same - that and the need to try and limit my kids' screen time made me want to try it. 1

Yeah same experience here - On ADSL you used to have to "sniff" the proper username/password and put into your own device but on FTTP it doesn't matter, they're not fussed (Unifi user here!) 1
