How old can we go?

 

This just made me think about an old Mac Book Pro that's been sitting in the cupboard for a good few years now...

Suggestions to keep it out of e-waste...? Got be OK for a web browsing machine...

 

Any point in Win 10? We're a Windows shop, so probably not worth paying for a Chrome OS license and I don't fancy learning Linux...

Not providing 10 years of security updates minimum is just causing ewaste. Even phones are getting 7 years of updates now.

 

Windows 10 will run on a computer from 2000, that's 25 years

 

A computer from 2000 would have, maybe, a single core 1 GHz Athlon, a PIII of the same clock speed or God help you, a 1.4 or 1.5GHz Pentium 4. It'd have maybe a gig of RAM but more likely 512MB and a 20-30GB hard drive. Could you run Windows 10 on that? Maybe, with a following wind and a lot of patience. Even then, you'd be limited to the 32-bit version as the first x64 CPU was the Athlon 64 released in 2003. Would you want to? Not unless you're a sadist. Noone in their right mind would use a 25 year old computer for Windows 10, that's just insane.

no, wait, Windows 10 requires a CPU which supports PAE, an NX bit and SSE2. The first x86 compatible CPUs which had NX bits were the Athlon 64 (2003) and the Prescott Pentium 4 (2004). I'm pretty damn sure you'd still wouldn't want to run Windows 10 on those, though. I still have nightmares about the rooms full of Prescott Celerons I had to support in my first school.

Curses, I think that’s a gap in my ‘old crap’ horde pile that I can’t test. I was proud of getting an ancient P4 (Northwood) to run Windows 7 with all drivers (7 was a system hog to be fair). Not tried 10 on anything older than a Core2 E6600 or T7200.

 

I do have an Acer Ferrari running 10, that’s basically unuseable - it was never quick when new!

 

However, my home PC which is still PhenomII / 970 / 8GB / SATA is still very fast in the OS. I would say that 15 year old machines can be fine, but 20 - no. Windows 11 will finish that one off as well.
