CoPilot in Windows 11

Just had this exchange with Copilot in Windows 11. (See screenshot). It was actually 12:31pm when I asked! Even so, it's answer is completely wrong! I appreciate it's still in Preview, but it is a bit concerning that Copilot will be the basis of lots of new security features and it can't do basic time calculations!

 

 

I've been a bit disappointed with it in general so far. I can accept it making mistakes, that is expected, but the integration with Windows seems almost non-existant. If you find something it can do, all it does is pop up the button to allow you to do it yourself, rather than just doing it. It seems it responds more like a dictionary or encyclopeadia than an assistant. Questions like: What is my IP address, just give a definition rather than a useful answer. Maybe these are just slow steps due to privacy concerns.

 

I wonder if we need a new Forum category to discuss all things AI related?

I'll say this once, i'll say it again. AI for me is near to useless in a job sense.

 

Every time i ask it a job related question, it fails. Tried again this morning setting up a network switch and told me the wrong commands and had to end up formatting the switch!

Ok, it's not really, but Microsoft is doing their usual thing of using the same brand name for absolutely everything!

First time posting on any forum! Eek :-(

 

Anyway, I was on a webinar yesterday when they introduced CoPilot and showed off some of it's features and explained some of the potential applications.

 

They were AT PAINS to point out quite often that its performance is deeply reliant on what data it has access to and what information you feed it prior to giving it any tasks.

 

From what I can see it will be a great "secretary", writing fancy emails and creating lovely presentations, even spreadsheets for you, should you wish. Used in the right way with access to the relevant and supporting data it could make you more efficient and take the pressure off you when it comes to creating content, however, you will still need to check everything and proof-read your text. You should do that anyway, if you don't want to end up in trouble!

 

As far as security concerns go, I have many. People need to police strictly just what data this AI has access to and how deep it's reach is within any organisation. Perhaps you can use AI to police itself in that respect but I don't know enough to speculate too far.

 

Anyway, my initial reactions are positive in terms of daily workflow i.e. for basic tasks and creative endeavours, but the rest I remain sceptical over. Much rests on the user and how the user speaks to CoPilot...so in that sense it will only be as good as the person using it.

I use CoPilot daily (not the windows version, the one in VSCode).

It rarely gives the correct answer, but is always useful to me to speed things up even if it's just providing the text for me to tab complete so I don't have to type it.

Asking it to do things like document a function, or refactor something can give some good results.

Asking it to do anything vaguely complex and it will just spit out nonsense.

I'll keep using it, as it does help but be aware of the limitations.

Does anyone know if it's available in the 23H2 Education version? No option to enable it on the taskbar.

I think the Google version (Duet) is available for those with Google domains. Theres a 14day free trial, but it looks expensive @$30 per user per month

AFAICT Duet is basically bard (also free) https://bard.google.com/chat that's integrated into Google Workspace

There are some other Google AI things, such as vertex but used more from a programmatic PoV

Generally the idea is you pay for it to allow it to securely access your company documents
