Dos_Box Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 For the first time in many years I had to clone a hard drive M.2 SSD) the other day, and after asking around I had Macrium Reflect Free recommended to me. On visiting the site it appears they are retiring the free version and have taken it down as an option for download. Thankfully, you can still obtain it from Major Geeks and if you need this kind of software, then I would advise you grab it whilst you can! - https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/macrium_reflect_free_edition.html *It's a really good and easy to use package, and I was very impressed with it, so I'd advise you to get it to added to your toolkit. It imaged over USB C to a M.2 SSD enclosure fine, and the imaged drive booted first time 3
MrEprise Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 Herein lies the issue of course. The developers have realised that the free version does all that the majority of users need it to do, and they're not getting any money for it! I've found a couple of other utilities I've used in the past where a free version existed and did all I needed it to, now doesn't exist in a free version for obvious reasons. EDIT: Spelling.
DalekSec Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 Always used clonezilla never had any issues!
DeGrimmy Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Thanks for this. I downloaded and used it last night to set up my new SSD at home! 1
LeMarchand Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 This was a timely reminder for me too. My "media" disk has done a few unexpected self-checks of late and , while it shows as fine in Crystal, I thought I'd better replace it. This turned out to be quite a job as (from Macrium's help) some external caddies can be problematical. Never had a problem with mine, but this is probably the first 4TB disk that I've used it with. Had all sorts of problems getting it to be recognised, but it's finally in and working well. Macrium did a reasonably fast job of the clone, too.

I've noticed this too in the past few years where you go to download a previously free version of software, only to find it's now a 'demo' piece and you now have to pay for what they used to do for free. I can totally understand their point of view on this, and especially now given the reliability of Windows, home disk cloning not being such a requirement as before. I suspect that, whilst there will always be sales for these, those of us that have been around a while will always seek out the free version where possible.
