Help me understand this O365 A1 A3 A5 chart

I'm reading it that A1 is everything at the bottom in dark red.

A3 gives you everything in A1 plus those in the lighter red.

A5 gives you everything in A1 plus A3 plus those at the top in orange.

 

My reseller is disputing this :/

 

I've been told "All the bottom items are the ones you get in Office A3 and the top section is what you get if you have the A5 licence"

I agree with you that the A1 license should have all the dark red options (it's even got a box around it to show it's included in A1)

Does the reseller mean to say that if you wanted to give someone access to (for example) Sway, Bookings and Power BI Pro, they'd need all three licenses? That's tosh.

All the charts I've seen agree with you that a high level license contain everything in the lower tier as well.

As much as I'm confused by Microsoft licensing, it's quite clear that A5 includes everything in that chart and A3 includes everything inside the lighter red dashed box including the A1 offering the darker read dotted box.

 

What isn't clear is why they only use odd numbers! What happened to A2 and A4?

It's probably to do with making the different skews line up. Because you can (or could at some point) get E2 and E4 Enterprise licenses.

I agree with you, and others in but as an additional, it identifies (I think), that you can purchase the Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 and Plan 2 as separate products. So you can get A3 and all it includes as well as (for example) Defender for Office 365 Plan 2 without going the full Office A5 route.

Indeed, it was using these charts that I figured out that our requirements would be covered with A3 + A5 for Security, rather than the full blown expense of A5.
