iPhone 15 - Release Day!

Absolutely not buying. Mrs. Ditto has an iPhone and one of my kids - I'm guessing around series X or 11. I've never been one to get wrapped up in new launches of hyped products, iphones or otherwise. Perhaps I miss out on a thrill, but the bank account doesn't take a hit! Personally, the few times I've tried to help out on an Apple product, I'm completely lost and I wonder of the original concept of early Apple products being intuitive to use is long gone, but do acknowledge they are a lot more complicated and advanced then early products. To their credit, they do take really good photos, but reception is often behind my android.

I have recently replace my Moto G5 with a Pixel 6a. The only really benefit I see is photo quality. I miss the shake for light on the the old OS had. What really strikes me is they are still advertised as mobile phones, but seeing anyone having a telephone conversation on this devices is such a rarity nowadays!

Not had my (immaculate, well looked after) XR very long, coming from an original SE it was a massive upgrade.

 

I wouldn’t see any benefit from the outlay for a new one at all.

Okay then, clarification, up-to-date standards, not a 23-year-old spec (Google says USB2 was April 2000)

Typical Apple, really. Taking what works and doing it their way, which half the time is a much worse implementation. Fast/wireless charging spring to mind.

 

I suspect the base iPhone 15 only supports USB 2 because it uses the SOC that was in last years iPhone 14 Pro, which was also USB 2. The iPhone 15 Pro has a full 10gbit USB 3.1 controller in it so that will probably propagate down to the base models next year.

 

I'll admit that it's a crummy move from Apple, but at the same time I can't remember the last time I connected my phone to a computer to do any kind of data transfer and a 10gbit connection is only going to help those who are transferring large video files, which makes more sense for the Pro models than it does for the base ones.

 

As for charging standards, those seem to be an utter mess at the best of times and the faster charging speeds in a lot of the Android phones seem to use proprietary standards of their own.

Sideloading of apps on iOS will be VERY interesting. The only app I would side load is WiFiFoFum which is a Jailbreak app

 

 

Although IOS 17 sideloading is EU only so might not get in UK

I have a iPhone 14 for work and a personal 11.

 

Even though it is notable how much better the 14 is, the 11 is fine, apart from the battery is starting to show its age. So I may upgrade depending on how long I can make it last.

 

My old work phone was a 12 Mini. That is the worst phone I have ever had. Anyone who has one of these I would certainly recommend upgrading.

Out of curiosity, what made the 12 mini so bad? My work phone is a 12, apart from the bigger notch and slightly different camera layout, it doesn’t seem significantly worse than my 13.

The size is the big issue. It was quite difficult to use. I’m not sure if it’s due to using a bigger screen or the apps are optimised for a regular sized iPhone. The screen itself seemed lower quality than my 11, but to be honest I am not sure if that was just me.

 

A lot of people complained about them, it wasn’t just me. Since the rollout of the 14 it was noted the data consumption increased and usage on one of the corporate apps had significantly increased.

 

The only reason they had the mini in the first place was that’s all they could get due to shortages.

 

Apple don’t make them anymore so I assume everyone else agrees.

I'm looking for a phone that can double as a desktop computer, although I suspect a rooted android would be more flexible for this.

I got the 15 standard from a 13. Buying direct from apple via the 24 month loan and a cheap sim only halved my o2 monthly costs. Child 2 gets the 13 now. Child 1 will get my wife’s 13 when she upgrades in sept.

Oh and I get my old 11 back for my personal phone.

 

This keeps the kids happy, we all have current phones that are fully supported and we make could use of parental features to keep an eye on the kids.

 

I’d have liked usb3 speeds but it’s totally academic. The only time I plug my phone in for data transfer is for the initial transfer setup. And not always then.

 

Samsung also limit many of their phones to usb2 speeds. But really who uses cables for phones data transfer anymore. Maybe only high end users - hence 15 pro usb3 in those.

I need to go to the O2 shop at the weekend to get a proper look at colours before I decide which one to get. My 2yo 13 will then go to my partner and her 4 year old 11 will be traded in or sold.

 

Well, I went into the shop and all they had was a silver one (But I ordered a blue standard 15 anyway).

 

Apparently in another (reasonably local) shop, they had all been stolen within a few hours of being installed.
