I’m looking for a entry IT role

Hi all

 

My names sameer, I’m currently a it hardware technician with 3 years experience mainly repairing, setting up devices whilst doing data sanitisation, im looking to move in from this and go for a more entry level it support or similar role and eventually move into cloud

As it seems that’s the inevitable future, whilst working I’m currently learning for my aws cloud practitioner exam and Google cyber security proccesional exam, in terms of location my highest priority will be completely remote at the moment due to a current situation, im more than happy to provide a CV if asked

Hi Sameer,

Keep an eye on the employment section but I would find it very unlikely you will find a fully remote role in a school as a lot of the work is hands on and schools are still very much based on face to face internally.

Universities or large Colleges may be a better bet.

I think you'll struggle to find a fully remote school placement. Even in Lockdown 1 I was expected to be in. (Hence I had no sympathy for all those "I had such a struggle keeping occupied during lockdown" articles). IME schools do actually need some degree of on-site in that things get broken or go wrong, or not plugged in etc etc etc, and need hands-on attention. Plus a fair amount of "hand-holding" is "needed" by staff.

 

If you find somewhere and they have more than one vacancy, please post here; I'm sure there will be lots of interest if the pay is right!

For an entry level look at an apprenticeship. It is going to be tough as it is and only wanting a remote role is defo limiting your choices for an entry role. Schools without a doubt are the best way to get in as the exposure is going to be wide. But do you want to focus on schools, maybe an entry level into a Uni or College might be better as their might be more chance of some WFH and progression though the ranks to your ideal wanted role. That is if you want a Edu role at all?

 

Doing an IT certification is a defo worthy aspect, though so keep that part up, get signed up to agencies etc.

thanks for the reply guys, it may be the remote part thats mainly finding a job hard, in terms of learning other than looking on youtube, are there any entry level website i can use to get better basic IT skills that are most likely going to be used day to day ?

I've been in my current role for just about 2 years now and have been looking to move on, I've found that the IT Career Questions subreddit is really useful when looking for other people's experiences and their recommendations on how to break into IT and specific roles, just search "Cloud" or something similar: https://www.reddit.com/r/ITCareerQuestions/

 

Alternatively one resource I've been looking at is "Developer Roadmaps": https://roadmap.sh/

It's a community made site on how to get into a specific development area. I'm currently working through ASP.NET Core as I used ASP.NET with MVC during my University Degree. Hopefully these resources are useful to you. As others have said it is very unlikely you will find a fully remote role in education. Best of luck in your search and with the certifications!

Our head of IT is looking to get an apprentice in but it would have to be on site 5 days a week. And as we are in rural Wales I cannot see anyone wanting to be in a school 5 days a week doing IT monkeywork for an apprentices wage. For a remote job I'd look at a big corporation, a lot of my friends worked in Admiral and they are now mostly WFH.
