Is anyone using this?

I keep getting piles of iPads handed to me because "Seesaw isn't working", but most of the time things seem fine when I test them. I don't think it's the "one pupil has error, rest see a chance to skive" scenario though can't rule it out.

I have seen Seesaw used in the suite and not been alerted to problems there, so it could be wi-fi (but why only Seesaw?) or an iPad/MDM thing.

Basically, is anyone else experiencing problems with this app?

We use it regularly here and no-one has ever reported any issues with it not working.

The first thing I'd rule out is whether it's the same teacher/s having problems.

I'd also need a clearer definition of "isn't working". Do they mean that work that has been assigned isn't appearing, pupils are unable to log in or connect to their class, etc.

The other thing to check is whether the iPads have the school or family version installed (or both). I think the latest version combines the two, so it may be an idea to check in your MDM whether there is an update available.

The other thing

EDIT: The other thing is... there is no other thing! (Not sure where that came from!)

Cheers nothing showing for Tuesday, which was one of the days.

Anyone familiar with how to "properly" use the app. Would the teacher normally create a whole bunch of bits of work and the pupils pick and choose?

:bump:

Just bumping this in case it gets some new input. Still having problems. Unfortunately all I get to see is the aftermath, but it seems that some of the class will be able to "respond" and others can't.

This may be teacher error, as I have recently been called to help in a class where the pupils couldn't log in (turned out it was a "mixed" class and the teacher didn't realise different classes needed a different login though the main problem is with logged in users) and another where the class couldn't open a spreadsheet because the file was only shared with a limited set of users.

Obviously the two most strident teachers who have been given a set of pads with a trial configuration have yet to provide useful feedback.

So is each pupil supposed to have a unique code? They're giving the same one to a whole class.

Thats how we have got around it - we used the text codes previously (SEN setting, no password remembering) then started getting issues.... so we have issued all students with their own QR code-- seemed to stop all the issues.

The 2fa was a bit on the sneakier side...

hope this helps

Hmmmm... if I haven't got the wrong end of the stick, it sounds as if it could be that multiple uses of the same code could be causing a log jam/time out - so the first few peeps might be OK, and then the rest are out of luck?

Update: This seems to suggest one code for multiple users is OK - https://help.seesaw.me/hc/en-us/articles/203495019-Student-sign-in-modes. Though I guess they could be using someone else's name after that stage.

Having a look at that sign in modes article, looks like we have been using homelearning codes all the time, so my solution probably isn't helpful. we stopped using it in school as our iPads were too old for the updated app, and SMT wanted to ensure and track when it was being used for home learning.

Cheers. It's looking like that if I'm going to get to the bottom of this I may... have to... gointoaclass :puke:.

Yeah but then-- you might actually get to the bottom of the problem because erm *very much my own opinion, and based on my own interactions* most kids below 13 know exactly what they are doing, and can tell you the actual problem, enjoy telling you exactly what they did ...... and *REALLY my own opinion, especially for primary age* accept if its their mistake and will learn from it. very unlike adults.

And again, I might be really lucky in my job, but I have the patience of a saint with kids because they are learning, and will make mistakes... adults on the other hand.......

sorry off topic...

You also need to consider whether the school is paying for premium or just using the free version. If it's free, then the kids will scan a QR code to join the class. If it's paid for, they'll have their own log in. (...I think.)

If it is paid for, there will also be access to an admin portal where you'll be able to see all classes, teachers and pupils, and have access to information about posts and responses, etc.

Can't see an obvious way to check if paid for as I was only given access when I pointed out that I could try to diagnose any problems if I couldn't even sign in! However, this seems to suggest that they shouldn't be logging in the way they are as they have shared devices:

Now I need to find out who set it up!

Slowly getting somewhere - thanks for the pointers, folks.

If you're signed in as an administrator and you can see multiple classes then it's paid for. If you're signed in using a class teacher's credentials you may not be able to tell.

In that case, I think it may be that someone has logged in previously and never logged out. New pupil opens Seesaw, is already signed in as someone else and just carries on with the lesson.

Now I need to find out who set it up!

If it's the free version, class teachers will probably have set up their own classes individually. The paid for version will (should) be administered centrally.
