[22h2] Start menu/taskbar

Hi All,

 

We're going through testing for a Windows 11 rollout this summer and are having a little glitch with the start menu. We login as normal, but for about 7-12 seconds the task bar & start button is completely blank(looks grey). It does then load, and only happens for the very first time a user logs into a computer.

 

Haven't reached the stage of customising the start menu layout yet, so just wondering if anyone else has seen this problem?

Make sure you are using the latest Windows 11 version including Feature and Quality updates. This was a known issue for early version of Windows 11, but the recent updates solved the problem.

 

We just noticed that pupils can access taskbar icons next to the clock (WiFi, sound) where previously this was blocked on earlier version of Windows 11. Not sure if it's our domain GPO specific or the Group Policy "Remove Notifications and Action Center" is not working anymore.

Just investigating this right now and I think that we need to add another GPO - Enable or Disable Quick Settings in Windows 11

This could have gone in the Annoying Things thread - but actually I was spoilt for choice for that today!!

 

Anyway - I have been ignoring WIndows11 up to now because I checked quite a while ago and discovered that Mrs Mikeprice's laptop was not compatible with it

 

Hence I wanted mine to stay on Windows 10 as well so I could do things on mine then tell her what to do on hers

 

Anyway - just after lunch she 'mentioned' that her keyboard had stopped working - totally

caps lock light wouldn;t come on and the NumLock light was on but wouldn;t go out

same in several applications

 

tried an external keyboard that I had hanging around (doesn't everyone??) and that worked fine

 

while I was doing this she mentioned that it had done an update last night so she just left it and went to bed - unplugged so it potentially could have shut down but it is unlikely

then it wanted to do another one this morning so she let it and after she noticed that the taskbar had changed

and that she noticed something about WIndows 11

 

yup - it had updated to WIndows 11 - something must have changed and her laptop had become compatible and had updated "without her authorising it"

 

 

 

anyway - we still have the keyboard problem

Device Manager said Error 19 - config thingy problem doofa of some kind

 

Anyway - swapped laptops with her - which is always traumatic for her due to icons being in the wrong place and other stuff

 

after a bit of 'fiddling' I deleted the keyboard and told Device Manager to look for new devices and it found it again and that fixed the problem

 

 

so - the questions

a) is this normal - as in has anyone had it?

b) any opinions on Windows 11 for home use??

 

 

ANyway - have to update mine now so I can keep level with hers - so I can recreate any problems she come up with - hence checking for potential pitfalls before I fall into them!

I’m enjoying Windows 11, have found it runs faster on the same kit that had Windows 10 installed. Rolling it out onto 100% of devices over the summer holidays.

 

Regarding the start menu, I’ve deployed a custom layout via GPO replacing (using the user file update option) the start.bin file as described at https://medium.com/@MrNick4B/deploy-a-customized-windows-11-start-menu-8832d90b25b1 has worked well for every logon, no issues.

So far I'm trying to avoid it as long as possible. I bought a Surface Pro 7+ this Christmas and spent the first hour or so installing Win10 on it. I found the memory utilisation at idle dropped by 10 to 20% straight away, and it just felt snappier.

 

Maybe in another year or so I'll change tactics, but so far I don't really see the benefit. I've had a couple trial it at work as well, don't think they were all that fond of it.

 

Keen to see what other experiences people have had with it.

I haven't really had any issues with Windows 11. I moved as I found quite a few of my customers had done the upgrade by accident and wanted to have some idea of what problems they might encounter. So the same as Mike really!

 

In terms of the home edition: if you're upgrading it might not be an issue, but on a clean install you have to try *really* hard to avoid signing in with a Microsoft account.

Did you ever find what setting does this? Looking to roll out and this is one of the last bugs.
