The school is seeking to appoint a ICT VLE Technician to join the ICT support team to take the lead to design, develop and maintain technical and functional design requirements for the school’s VLE. To develop electronic curriculum resources offering professional guidance, training and assistance to support teachers and pupils.

 

The school uses the Microsoft Learning Gateway as their Virtual Learning Environment.

The last vacancy I saw for a position such as this was SO1 and up, and it was solely to work with the VLE, no day to day tech involvement at all. These types of jobs are much more than managing the backend of a VLE, you have to get inside curriculum matters, pedagogy and the like. It's much more than teachers putting Powerpoint presentations online, despite what the rep from Uniservity said.

It looks like I'll be taking the lead with our Uniservity implementation and the 'putting powerpoint online' bit you mentioned is precisely what I need to get through to staff... it's not just an 'application' its, potentially, a new way of teaching and will only succeed if it's seen that way by staff / SLT etc.

 

But the chance of me being bumped up to S01 is pretty slim

Uniservity is the "VLE" of choice for our LEA, and I believe all the primary schools are going down this route. It's a different picture when it comes to secondary schools though and part of the blame for this must lie with the LEA for not getting round to this earlier. Some heads, teachers and technicians saw the BECTA requirements several years ago and started making plans for the future then, so we have a mish mash of VLE's from the commercial to OS. Getting teachers to change VLE two or three years down the line will be difficult, after all, 18 months isn't regarded as a long lead in time for introducing a VLE. I'm spending some time this summer going through as much managing technological change literature as possible.

Our head rejected Uniservity despite the offer from the LEA to fund this for an initial three years, and decided to go down the Moodle route. This may change in three or four years time when we come under the wing of a managed service, but who knows what the future will bring?
