MS Updates

I have a laptop running XP Pro with SP3 that won't install MS updates. The little shield shows in the sys tray, I click and OK the install, it initiallises takes ages then tells me that all of them failed.

 

On the same laptop when shutting down, I get an 'Install updates and shutdown' notification but I'm guessing from the short amount of time it takes that the updates are not in fact installed.

 

Trouble is that some of the updates that are showing in the unsuccessful list are already installed whilst others are not.

 

Has anyone experience of this, is there anything I can do?

There are troubleshooting guides you can follow for Windows Update 'issues'.

 

This seems the most 'extreme' but it says its for SP2 but I doubt it matters post that.

We've had that issue with every new machine - first thing we do is install SP3, after which there's always a few updates that fail to install until we do the following, at a command prompt:

 

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll

 

That usually fixes things - if it doesn't then following the link in kmount's post should sort it.

Try downloading the Windows Update Agent 3.0 and run this command:

 

WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

 

then restart. I had the same problem the other day and this sorted it

Out of curiosity, are these new installs. I mean using a slipstreamed disc or are you installing SP3 on top of an existing installation?

 

The majority of the workstations I look after, I have re-installed using a slipstreamed disc, but haven't experienced the problems you describe.
