Right im a bit confused!!

my mate has asked me to look at his laptop as his internet has now stop workin wirelessly. He has also noticed that teh wireless icon has dissapered from the notification area so he asked me to have a look. I began by checking the obvs first.

1. Checked to see if wireless switch was in the on position

2. Restarted laptop - no difference

3. Checked drivers - couldnt see the driver isntalled

4. went hp website and downloaded new driver. Program seemed to install but didnt say if it wer completed or not which i thought was unusual.

5. Check in services to see if the wireless zero config was started and it was

6. Did a system restore this failed on all the dates i tried - tried 4 different ones

7. ran a full system scan to make sure no viruses on the system

8. connects to the net via ethernet seemlessly

9. Ran the HP recovery from the partion to set it back to factory inc drivers

10. Drivers for wirless still not appearing in device manager

 

So i am unsure what to look for now. Rather bugging me cus its probs summet really obvs.

 

Btw its a HP Pavilion DV 2000 entertainment notebook.

Running XP home SP2

 

Would appreciate as much help as possible. :-) Thanks in advance.

check to see if it is enabled in the BIOS

checked bios and cant see any system config in it all appart from boot order date and tym and security and diagnostics

hmm.. this is a difficult one..

 

did you say it is not showing up in device manager... >

 

if there is no setting in the Bios.. which is pretty unusual as there normal is.

 

Could it be that the internal wifi adapter s faulty, have you tried taking the wifi cover off under the laptop off and making sureit is connected ok and that it aint come loose.

 

its a long shot i know... but just an idea...

anything in eventviewer regarding wireless error messages , if so whats the event id and description ?

 

control panel --> system admin tools --> event viewer

 

OR

 

start --> run --> eventvwr.msc

 

Go through the system and application logs to see if there is anything relating to wireless and post back.

 

Also the above suggestion with regards to shutting the laptop down and dis connecting and taking out the wireless card and re seating it firmly and then re connecting the wires to the wireless card ( making sure to make a note of which wire goes where ) and then rebooting to see if that helps.

 

Also when you did the system check did you disable system restore so that viruses etc are not getting restored back after you have done the scan ?

right even more confused but i happy now. Came to the laptop this morning and turned it on and it detected the wireless card. Most unusual.

im now not happy restarted the laptop after a quick test on the net and now the wireless card is not recognised. hmmm :$

Try manually running the Add Hardware wizard in Control Panel. It's possible the adapter has become faulty, but in my experience, it still shows up in Device Manager with Windows claiming everything's ok.

I had a somewhat similar problem to this in a school with a Dell Latitude 610 (I think) only this was on the Wired Adapter. It was basically disabling the Wired Network adapter when it was not in use for about 5 minutes or more. I then had to go into Device manager - re-enable the Wired Network Adapter and it would be okay.

 

I subsequently found (after it did the same thing again) that there was an option somewhere when I went to Network Conn's then Right Clicked and chose properties which told the thing to turn off (disable itself) after a set period of inactivity, the damn thing was then disappearing rather then just being greyed out. This opion was being touted as some kind of clever power saving idea...

 

Might be worth a look anyway?

 

 

Also I've now forgotten what you wrote in your original post but have you checked the website for any revised drivers (this could have been a known issue).

The answer, most probably, lays in the Fn Keys.

 

On the F keys at the top of keyboard you will find a wireless symbol in blue, hold down the Fn key (normally bottom left) and the press the F key.

 

This is probably what was done when you saw the wireless working a couple of days ago.

 

There should be a light on the laptop that comes on when the wireless is available.
