Foresthippy Posted September 23, 2022 Posted September 23, 2022 Hi, Is anyone aware of a tool that can automatically read the email address from AD and populate the email field in SIMS, for pupils? Cheers, John
lmrogers Posted September 23, 2022 Posted September 23, 2022 If you use Salamander they have the ability to write the emails back into SIMS, I think the write back license for it was about £100 on top of the normal salamander license. 1
jthompson Posted September 23, 2022 Posted September 23, 2022 We don't have a tool for this as such, but we use the CSV import routine in SIMS (Routines → Data In → Student Data → Import From Spreadsheet). The CSV needs the columns Forename, Surname, Admission Number and Email Address. We store admission numbers in AD, which helps here. There'll be various ways to generate the CSV out of AD: A PowerShell command or WiseSoft Bulk AD Users to name a couple.

When importing the CSV, does the data need to contain every pupil in SIMS? or can you pick and choose students? I don't want to bulk update 40 students and find out SIMS has deleted the rest!
3s-gtech Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 I do it with SIMS Bulk Import - not automatic but pretty good and it's flexible with things like UDFs.
coolhands Posted July 6, 2023 Posted July 6, 2023 We use salamander it writes back to the field when creating the AD and gmail account for students (ours is all linked). IIRC we discussed the rules eg if a student with the same forename surname already exists what does it do, and also if it is a stupidly long name what does it truncate to.
