OneDrive Drive Mapper & Large Files

Hello, we are interested in moving user files to OneDrive, but dont want to use the OneDrive sync tool due to some bad experiences of nearby schools. Cloud Drive Mapper (Maps local drives to OneDrive) has been recommended to give users a familiar and simple experience of accessing their OneDrive folders. However their current release is fine for small files but large (e.g.1GB PDF's) take literally minutes to open.

 

Can anyone suggest an alternative/similar solution which will cope with large files?

a 1GB PDF must be quite the unwieldy file...

yes but a 1G+ powerpoint, mp4, pdf is not unusual. we need to privide a solution for staff opening these from OneDrive, they can't take many minutes to open...

We use Cloud Drive Mapper, but it’s not a solution for large files. Sync the chosen library / folder via the OneDrive client from a web browser and mark the desired files as available offline.

Only thing I could think of is not having files on demand enabled, so there is a copy of files stored locally on the device.

 

 

Which isn't what I'd recommend.. I'm not sure of any other alternatives to cloud mapper.

Use FSLogix to store onedrive files-on-demand in what is basically a roaming profile. Might not meet your use case especially if laptops are in use.

 

Overall I think this is a 'wouldn't start from here' problem. Onedrive mapper cannot be anything more than a tactical workaround

 

a 1GB file is always going to take time to open from a a remote location but is presumably the exception rather than the rule.

You need to do some testing within your network to see what 'real world' speeds you achieve using various products and solutions be it the OneDrive client way or a drive mapping solution. Anything said here or elsewhere will not reflect what you can/could achieve as many factors can effect how the OneDrive client performs.

 

You should also consider your internet connection and it's resiliency. Is it up to the task, do we need more bandwidth or speed. Worrying about 1gb files comes way down the list and isn't really an issue once the above is sorted.

 

We've been running OneDrive client for a number of years very successfully, local storage space was the only thing that bit us on some older machines.
