I am considering IKEA. But struggling to find how functional they are. For example can they schedule lights on and off (and maybe automatically know when sunset is) as well as a physical switch to over ride. Do they work if the internet is off? Can you see how consumption on the plugs?

 

If anyone has a good resource for the feature set (and maybe others) it would be good.

I have the TP-Link Kasa HS110. They show consumption.

 

I am with you on trying not to have servers at home especially since WFH I have removed my AD, Cert sevices, Radius and now jus got my 2 HA firewalls running on ESXi but migrating to a couple of MikroTiks to reduce the power and complexity. Still a bit of complexity but nothing involving Microsoft apart from a laptop and a few desktops :-) Still a need to have backups and a NAS so have got most VMs working on Synology as running them anyway for Emby etc.

I am considering Philips now. Do they show power consumption please? I don't really want it at the moment but would be nice to have.

I think I could achieve this with the Google Home integration. It seems to have this in the Google Home app on my iPhone. I am thinking of keeping to Google instead of Apple homekit. I think the integration will allow additional controls?

 

IKEA has a new bridge coming out very soon so might hold out for that.

They do in Home Assistant with an addon called Powercalc, it knows what the usage of a large amount of the hue bulbs and calculates what its using at X brightness.

Just setup Home Assistant this weekend, so far so good.

 

Using a Sonoff USB dongle with some of the IKEA Zigbee stuff, all seems to be working. £15 for each plug seems reasonable.

I've not tried the plugs (yet) but I'm finding Drayton Wiser as a heating control quite good. Just installing TRVs all around to cut the temps in rooms not occupied all the time.

 

In an effort try and improve our ancient oil boiler control (no room thermostat and a crude timer), I've also been playing with Drayton Wiser and Drayton Digistat (the local bluetooth version) and find it pretty good. I like that it's a UK heating company with the kit made just down the road from us, backed by Schneider so decent support. I also got a special offer TP Link KASA TRV and smartplug. It looks like the emerging Matter protocol (couldn't they find a better name?) should allow even more things to work together;

I'm also running it through Home Assistant on a rpi 400 which works very well for me. I'm looking to see what else I can add on and I do confess to enjoying tinkering with it all. However, I wouldn't like to rely on all this kit as there's a lot to go wrong so the old boiler controls are still there in parallel, just in case..

I used to sing the praises of TP Link Kasa, but the KP115 has not lived up to expectations as 3 of them have failed now out of about 12 bought. The electronics fail in them, even the switch on the side does not work and the LED is off even though the plug is still suppling power to the connected device. So looks like I'm going to be looking at Zigbee or Hive, preferably ZigBee so I'm not forced to use a 3rd party cloud app.

 

It is not like I'm putting too much power through the KP115 either, like 200 watt max.

I also use the Tapo version of the TP Link plug, had some for a few years now without issue and I've just upgraded to the ones with energy monitoring built in

I think there is a way to intergrate Tapo with Home Assistant, really after a solution that does not require an App at all now. My iPhone and iPad don't like playing with apps (Sonos for instance jus don't want to know when trying to add a new Sonos speaker).

Yes, it looks like the Tapo P110 has some Home Assistant integration https://github.com/petretiandrea/home-assistant-tapo-p100 but there a few issues reported with it

 

I have had one of the Kasa KP115 plugs for almost a year running perfectly in HA ; however a few times a months it loses the wifi and gets stuck with a red light - turning it off and on is the only way to reset it so ok but not perfect. A shame as it is pretty accurate and produces useful data. I've also tried Computime Salus SP600 and Aurora 50AU - zigbee based but less accurate and don't seem as well put together.

 

There is also a new Tapo version P110M https://www.tp-link.com/uk/home-networking/smart-plug/tapo-p110m/v1/ using Matter protocol which is a bit beta ATM and fine if you like tinkering, I do so I may get one!
