Which asset management is the best, with barcode scanning IT equipment? I work in a school which currently using very old last century method:rolleyes: I have yet need to persuade the school to spend little money on moving to this century, but Im working on it...so hit me with your best shot.

Been using GLPI for years (self hosting for free), but the other ITAM products suggested here will be worth considering, too.

Would recommend one that uses agents and network discover/scanning to automate the collection and updating of your inventory data. Probably not unique to GLPI, but it will populate a tonne of info such as BIOS version, OS details, installed software versions, whether BitLocker is enabled on volumes, antivirus database versions, etc.

No native barcode support, other than just taking barcode input straight into a search form. There's a CSV plugin available for GLPI which allows you to do CSV based imports or updates, too. There's also a REST API if you want to get really 21st century.

We use AssetTiger at our school, was significantly cheaper than some of the other alternatives (such as Every), but was relatively pain free when you use QR codes and the iOS/Android app. The only gripe with it was we couldn't find a way to implement PAT testing, or a method to update PAT tests in bulk, so we use Every for compliance stuff.

We do PAT testing through AssetTiger just create a custom question on the Asset form. This can be bulk updated on asset through Mass Update.

Do any of these asset systems allow for custom additional field names to be added? I've always found they don't include some useful fields that i currently use.

There's a plugin for GLPI called Addition Fields which I'd highly recommend if you're using GLPI. As an example, I've used that to add fields for recording the date of projectors' last filter clean, so that we can run a report for any that are due to be cleaned. I've also used it to include information about each classroom's ceiling structure and projector mount. Nice and powerful.

We've been using Snipe-IT for years. It works on both Linux and Windows based servers (Linux is much, much faster but we use Windows as we're not Linux experts).
