Drive destruction

Hi, does anyone know of a good company or service that does drive destruction at a reasonable price? And just curious how other IT ppl at schools approach this, do you do it annually or just when you have a lot of drives to dispose of?

The only time we have drives destroyed is when we send old computers for recycling. We use https://enviroelectronics.co.uk/ . They collect the old kit for free and do the data destruction as part of that service.

If I have loads, they'll go through a WEEE recycler who we pay to destroy them (with a certificate of destruction). Take your pick - we often use PRM.

 

If they're few, or server disks, I smoosh and smite them myself.

I'm just thinking along the lines of all this data retention stuff and destroying data periodically. I was curious what other schools do about it.

We used to go down to our technology metalwork shop and beat them on the anvil with a large hammer. Data destruction and stress relief in one go..

We also use computer recycling companies that'll do it for free providing there's enough equipment being disposed to make it worthwhile. We've used PRM and ICT Reverse. In my last job I had a recycling company over in the neighbouring industrial estate where I'd sometimes drive up for small adhoc jobs, and they'd put the drives in their industrial metal shredder and allow me to watch... very satisfying. Think it was somewhere between 75p to £2 per drive, albeit that was 10 years ago.

If looking at Data Retention, then it is likely that the relevant individual files would have been deleted before the drive went out of action, unless it is part of decommissioning some hardware or a hardware failure. The destruction is only to ensure that nothing is recoverable in any way.

Just to extend on this, we have lots of Data & Video Media Tapes that need to be destroyed. We also use Enviroelectronics,and they have advised that they can also handle and destroy media tapes too (whereas other companies are charging per item). But I'm still apprehensive in case if any (even one) go a miss. Has another else used them (or anyone else) for the secure destruction of Media Tapes?

 

The alternative would be to pay for another company to do on-site destruction, ~£4 per media tape plus travel costs; although I know you can't put a price on secure data handling and destruction!
