Dell WD19S weirdness

The plot thickens...

 

A new Dell laptop on the Dell dock works as expected - 2 screens @ 1680x1050 1 screen @ 1920x1080, or 3 screens @1920x1080

 

The HP Laptop on a borrowed StarTech Triple OP dock works as expected 2 screens @ 1680x1050 1 screen @ 1920x1080 or 3 screens @1920x1080

 

So the 2 don't work together but they work in every other configuration I can test!

If its any consolidation, after my WD19 I bought a Lenovo docking station for my Lenovo laptop, carefully noting it supports dual 4K @ 60hz and the USB C / DP bandwidth width is enough but being unable to make this work.

 

After much swearing and googling turns out that although the port has the bandwidth, the docking station can do it, internally the laptop has a limitation on PCIE bandwidth

The delicious irony here being that the dock that works is almost £150 more expensive than the laptop itself. The whole point of this was to try and save money and reduce support time. So far the project for two users with docks has cost more than each of them having a refurbished second device, cost almost 3 full days of my time and is still less reliable.

 

Fixed desktops every day.

Have you updated the firmware? In the release notes of the latest version it says

 

"Improved the display compatibility related to combinations of host PCs and monitors"

I'm going to massively jinx our setup here but my team all use multiple WD19S (as we work across several schools) and we've never had any issues with any combination of up to 3 monitors. Now granted we've paired it with Dell XPS laptops so they should both work together but I've been impressed with the fact we've had zero issues with it.

Yeah, it worked immediately with my Wife's work Dell 5430 (the only Dell with USB-C I could lay my hands on at short notice).
