Not really sure where to post this as I'm sure it affects more than just MIS...

 

There are still odd posts popping up with everything from MIS and Microsoft Office to CCTV as still needing IE11 either for core functionality or just as the only browser the software will work with. With the reminder email dropping yesterday, I wondered if everybody has found ways of these pieces of software using alternate browsers.

 

I'm not sure if SIMS still actually requires it for anything, but it's the only thing here that might cause issues if it does....

What MIS are you using? We use SIMS and Chrome is the default browser on all of our workstations, therefore any .XML reports exported via SIMS open in Chrome.

 

CCTV? We have Hikvision and use the NVMS-1000 software to connect to the NVR and view every camera.

 

If you require IE11 you could always run it in a VM with no internet access.

Download the IE Tab Chrome extension. This works with Hikvision

Funnily enough we have HIK for our CCTV and didn't have any issues connecting to it with Chrome (that might be a lie as I seem to remember downloading a 'Local Service Components/Web Components.exe' file when we first got the system)...

 

It was just this part that made me wonder if somehow they intend to strip out IE from the operating system (or just disable it) though as I've seen that there are still a few core components of some software that leverages IE:

 

This means that the IE11 desktop application will no longer be supported and will be progressively redirected to Microsoft Edge over the following months, and ultimately disabled via Windows Update, to help ensure a smooth retirement.

I suspect it'll be a removal tool like Flash. After IE is removed, you'll still see a cut down version of Internet Options in Control Panel.

I've got a windows 7 laptop which is turned off in a cupboard 99% of the time.

 

I still need it for certain switches which are manged by Java in the Browser, others that require a discovery app that crashes on windows 8 or above and to configure a NAS that requires an ActiveX plugin. We have plans to replace all of the affected hardware but some of it won't be until next summer due to budgets.

I think the key terminology there is IE11 desktop application, which I think is distinct from the underlying dll's and whatever else needed for IE mode in Edge to continue working beyond June.

If they're HP/Aruba, upgrading to a newer firmware doesn't require IE or Java and works fine in Chrome.

I've still got a pair of HP 2900 from 2006 in production as well as the POE switch/controller from an *ancient* 3Com wireless G system.

 

The devices that still require Java look like they ought to be upgradeable to a FW that negates Java, but I can't get the updates to take. They just refuse with an error about the firmware not being in the correct format, other apparently identical devices take it fine. :shrug:

 

I've got a pile of shiny HP Aruba 6200 and 2930 due during the summer holidays to do 2 sites, with the other site due next year either at Easter or during the summer.

You could try a few upgrade files, say from 2010 > 2014 > 2018 etc... and build it up slowly.

I followed an upgrade path that was published on one of the HP forums. It worked for 5 out 8 of the switches, but 3 won't have it. They all updated to a certain point, I can't recall exactly what, possibly a September 2016 release still needing Java, and then 5 went all the way to the latest available patch at the time which I think was one from 2019 to prevent high-CPU-reboots which didn't require Java.

 

I'm not super fussed now the issue has been identified and money allocated in the budget to deal with it!

The 2900 series should upgrade via SSH a bit more reliably. Share a folder containing the firmware via tftp and then step through the firmware revisions one at a time as @Michael mentioned.

I'll be honest I've not tried via SSH/TFTP. I'll give it a go.
