Does anyone know how to set up Smoothwall SMTP (Email) Output System to send email via G Suite?

I have input the senders email address, username and password but when I try to send a test email nothing happens.

I'm having issues with this too. We always used to use aspmx.l.google.com which has worked for year. However, due to a shift in roles etc, I've now noticed we've not been receiving email alerts recently (perhaps since the summer).

I updated Smoothwall to the latest release (Leeds 63) overnight in the hope that would resolve it, but alas no.

I've now tried using smtp.google.com with everything ticked and all details in, but nothing happens when I try and send a test.

Is there a log anywhere I can see where it's failing? Is there a chance it's getting blocked by our Google mail service?

Any pointers on where to look would be much appreciated

SMTP transaction logs will be in the /var/log/messages file but there is no viewer in the UI so command line access is where to have a look. However, take a look at this:

https://support.google.com/a/answer/176600?hl=en

from

https://kb.smoothwall.com/hc/en-us/articles/360003683819

and use

smtp-relay.gmail.com

As well as enable the auth and TLS options.

Unfortunately, this still isn't working, but I'm now wondering if additional ports need to be opened on our firewall (we don't use Smoothwall as our firewall, we have a managed service for our firewall provided by our ISP).

Do you know which ports they would be? 25, 465 and 587?

Many thanks.

According to the Google KB article, any of those ports can be used apparently but I believe Smoothwall will be sending to port 587.

'On your device or in your app, connect to smtp-relay.gmail.com on one of these ports: 25, 465, or 587.'

I am also having trouble getting it to send an email from gmail:

I've tried both smtp.gmail.com and smtp-relay.gmail.com but no joy :(

If it's for safeguarding alerts, it might be easier just to get them sent through our cloud system. It does require you to have that set up and alerting, and then I need to flick a switch, so drop me an email

Strange - Those same smtp-relay settings seem to have worked for me.

Could be something google-side. The big players are trying to make it impossible to send email outside their closed ecosystem. Probably good for spam, bad for many other things.

smoothwall onprem should probably have oauth for emailing now anyway… more secure and its the future[emoji106] unless they ditch emailing onprem.. Edited by CrootUK

There are no problems at all to set up Smoothwall with e.g. Gmail.

It is important to have mail set up to see any attacks and errors as updates.

The short answer: You have written the wrong address, the correct address is: smtp.gmail.com

The long answer: Both Google and Microsoft had problems with spam being sent through their SMTP servers a number of years ago, so they added additional protection, which caused problem for many systems...

However, Smoothwall were quite quick and added what was needed as well created this KB article that explains how to do also for printers and other devices:

https://kb.smoothwall.com/hc/en-us/articles/360003683819-Using-Cloud-Services-to-Send-out-Alert-Notification-or-Scheduled-Report-Emails

In this case, it is "Option 2: Send email with the Gmail SMTP server" in this link that best applies to Smoothwall if you use Gmail.

Hi Tom

Can you please setup safeguarding alerts at our school through the Cloud portal, as I'm having the same issues as others with email authentication although via Microsoft.

We have on prem S5 but I will PM you if I can.

Thanks

If you simply want to make the emails work in Smoothwall On-premise

I listened with one of our technicians.

Today, they usually set up a private Gmail account just for IoT.

Then it is very easy to make it work with Smoothwall and printers etc.

Each device gets its own password and you can easily remove devices that are not in use.

You should only use the account for devices and not change the password because then it stops working for all devices.

Requirements are two way auth.

Here is a description: https://nanopo.st/how-to/gmail-app-passwords/

Don't forget to remove the spaces in the password.

In Smoothwall use smtp.gmail.com and Enable SMTP auth and Enable SMTP TLS.

We have verified that this method works in both Leeds and Maiden without any problems.

We have our Google mail domain emails working on smoothwall. This is how we had it / do it now.

Google have / are removing the ability to use Less Secure Apps (LSA) which is how the smoothwall needs to be used with Google accounts.

So to get round this you need to enable 2FA on the smoothwall email service account and create an AppPassword to allow the Smoothwall to email on it's behalf.

Hi how are you?

How did you get this to work when smoothwall does not accept spaces in password and google app passwords have 16 characters with spaces between them?

Do let me know.

Many thanks

The app passwords dont require the spaces. They are broken up into blocks of 4 so it's easier to read.

Thicko (me) here just figured it out lol. Thank you!

Test worked..   just having issues with the generate test alert!

No worries, happens to the best of us.

SMTP Server is smtp.gmail.com

Sender's email and username is the email address

Password is the app password generated on the Google account

Tick Enable SMPT Auth and Enable SMPT TLS
