Hi,

 

We have an old part of the shool buildings which is not easy to get IT cabling to and there is just one network point in the ceiling that feeds a Unifi AC Pro Access Point.

 

I'm needing to add an IP phone in there and wondered if I could use the extra network port on the AC Pro to plug in the IP Phone. I already have a power socket so won't need POE, just data.

 

Would this work?

IIRC (not used unifi for few years) it is a passthrough port, so as long as the tagging for vlans is setup correctly on switch and the AP then yes you can configure it to what you want.

 

I had to do the setup you are explaining in my old job and worked fine.

Unfortunately our IP phone doesnt have Wifi, but would have been great if it had.

 

Going to test out the 2nd port of the AC Pro today. As the phones are 10/100 I want to check as it is possible it could halve the speed of the access point.

I have done similar with a printer, office space it was in I was limited and could not run additional cabling. Do run a PC off one here in my test environment as its easier than plugging a switch in when I only need 1 port.

A lot of old phones are 10/100Mb but I would not worry, it should still be good enough for general use. We have 750 switches and a good 25% are only 10/100Mb end ports but 1Gb uplink ports.

 

Got some Cisco in wall APs at home and using one of the additional ports (which can supply PoE) to run/power an old Cisco IP phone.
