Installing software from lists

Hey all,

 

Im trying to find a way for users to be able to install software from a pre approved list. When i worked for a Uni, we had a list on our start menu with a list of software users can install from.

 

Eg i want to install... VLC. The user would open the list and click to install it from the network. No admin rights needed.

 

Im looking for a free/built in or opensource way of doing this.

 

Anyone know?

What you need is SCCM Software centre.

 

Not free and the most closed-est of sources, but probably the competent solution.

Its more of a want than a need. Looking for something free. We only have around 50 users here

If the software is in the form of a deployable MSI, then you can do this using a GPO.

 

Apply the GPO at the required users in AD, and add the packages to "User Configuration > Policies > Software Settings > Software installation". Set the deployment option as "Published" rather than "Assigned".

 

The software will available for users to install via the Control Panel ("Install a program from the network").

New task. Some software asks for permission from an admin accounts but others dont.. Any ideas?

Not encountered that before. At a guess I would say that it's down to something specific that the installer is attempting to do during the installation process. Maybe something like trying to add a device?

I also make the M$ store available, some programs are available from their or their alternatives. The bonus being that the software gets updated regularly.
