LeMarchand Posted February 3, 2022 Posted February 3, 2022 https://deadline.com/2022/02/the-riftwar-cycle-fantasy-books-television-writers-hannah-friedman-jacob-pinion-nick-bernardone-1234923198/ This was supposed to be happening a while back and fell through, but this sounds like it could happen this time. IIRC this means we have had/are getting adaptations of most of the big series of the 80's Fantasy resurgence: Shannara, Sword of Truth (Legend of the Seeker), Wheel of Time and now Riftwar. All we need now are The Belgariad (David Eddings) and Memory, Sorrow and Thorn (Tad Williams) - or have I forgotten any?
E_G_R2 Posted February 3, 2022 Posted February 3, 2022 I really hope they don't do this badly. One of my all time series. I'm actually re reading the first 3 books now and am well into Silverthorn. 1

I really liked that and was disappointed it was cancelled (though unfortunately I can understand why). The only other 80's series I could think of was David Gemmell's Drenai saga, but I'm not sure if that's 'big' enough to count for this

Duranis Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 Lets hope it ends up more like Wheel of Time and less like Sword of Truth. Also please don't give them ideas about The Belgariad. It is my all time favourite fantasy series and I absolutely do not trust anyone to do a proper adaption of it for TV. However going slightly out of the pure fantasy genre and into Horror a little bit, a series based on Brian Lumley's Necroscope series could be awesome if we are talking popular 80's novel's.
Rob_D Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 What about the Thomas Covenant Cornicles? I remember those being pretty good
LeMarchand Posted February 4, 2022 Author Posted February 4, 2022 What about the Thomas Covenant Cornicles? I remember those being pretty good Loved the first two trilogies, read the first of the newer ones and wasn't impressed. They definitely weren't "heroic fantasy" like the others, though! Problem with TC would be that he's a pretty hard character to root for and the thing he does when he believes The Land is a dream, which it would be hard to change and keep later events intact, would be pretty unsurmountable by modern audiences. (Though I always understood that he was doing something in a "dream" that he wouldn't do IRL). 2
