LeMarchand Posted March 30, 2022 Posted March 30, 2022 My OH and I had different words today. This is probably not the site to help out, but if you contact me on "Dear LeMarchand" I'll do my best. 1
Andrew_C Posted March 30, 2022 Posted March 30, 2022 The "alternative" isn't accepted on my PC. Maybe the glitch has been fixed?
6Foot2 Posted March 30, 2022 Author Posted March 30, 2022 The "alternative" isn't accepted on my PC. Maybe the glitch has been fixed? When I played earlier today, I was offered the "official" solution. I would have solved it on my sixth guess, but a single letter typo meant that I offered another, incorrect, word and I failed today.
jthompson Posted March 31, 2022 Posted March 31, 2022 The browser I play on (FF on Android, with Blokada active on the device) is more likely to be blocking something 'extra' than the browser my OH plays on (Chrome on Android, with no Blokada gubbins). I wonder if there's some kind of update mechanism that the NYTimes have in place. I can imagine them looking ahead to see the next day's word being HARRY and deciding to take an editorial decision to change it via that mechanism. That's maybe why that article states that STOVE was the official solution, but a minority (the coolest people, naturally) were still playing the pure, unadulterated version of the game that day.
6Foot2 Posted May 9, 2022 Author Posted May 9, 2022 Link: New York Times drops ‘fetus’ as an answer to Wordle – but not for all players | New York Times | The Guardian The Times says it tried to switch the word for as many users as possible, apparently in response to the supreme court’s draft Roe v Wade ruling The New York Times has removed the word “fetus” from its Wordle answers to keep the game “distinct from the news”, a move apparently related to last week’s leaked Roe v Wade supreme court draft ruling. The change caused confusion as it was only implemented for some of the game’s players. “Today, some users may see an outdated answer for Wordle that seems closely connected to a major recent news event. This is entirely unintentional and a coincidence – today’s original answer was loaded into Wordle last year,” the New York Times said in a statement. The game’s answer-list is pre-written and assigned to a date. “When we discovered last week that this particular word would be featured today, we switched it for as many solvers as possible,” the newspaper said. The Times acquired Wordle earlier this year after it became a viral hit. The switch away from the word appears to be a move by the Times to avoid using a politically-charged term. Last week’s leaked supreme court draft majority opinion supported overturning the landmark Roe v Wade decision, putting in jeopardy rights to abortion across the United States and sparking a bitter national debate. “At New York Times Games, we take our role seriously as a place to entertain and escape, and we want Wordle to remain distinct from the news,” the Times said. It’s not the first time Wordle has offered up different solutions. In March, baffled users tweeted their confusion over two correct Wordle answers. In that instance, the solution could be either “harry” or “stove”. In that case the Times confirmed the answer had been changed as it removed potentially obscure or insensitive words “in an effort to make the puzzle more accessible”. When the Times acquired Wordle it also removed words such as “lynch,” “slave” and “wench”.
jthompson Posted May 9, 2022 Posted May 9, 2022 So, probably not worth trying JUDGE or COURT tomorrow, then?
mikeprice Posted May 9, 2022 Posted May 9, 2022 WOW - only just found this thread!!! Been doing it for a while now after finding out about it from a news website normally get it in 4 or 5 - sometimes 3 only failed once so far! - it was one of those where I had one letter left but loads of possible solutions! Mrs mikeprice does it sometimes - and 'isn't competitive at all" but as she has a degree in History and English Literature - and you all know my spelling and such - she normally beats me (Oh - I won yesterday!!!)
6Foot2 Posted May 9, 2022 Author Posted May 9, 2022 WOW - only just found this thread!!!... In that case, as noted earlier in the thread, beware the occasional divergence from British spelling! A word of warning to those of us in the UK. The words are from American English, despite the creator of the game having a totally British accent when interviewed on Radio 4 about it.

mikeprice Posted May 16, 2022 Posted May 16, 2022 I do Nerdle once you get the hang of it it is more logic than Wordle but still OK I have no chance at Herdle - tone deaf luckily there is no grammar or typing version that I would also be useless at (as 'some people' might guess)
Andrew_C Posted October 5, 2022 Posted October 5, 2022 The twonk had 4 letters in line 5 and one in line 6? What's the matter with him? AND - doesn't he know what Trumpolini was trying to do on Jan 6th?
Jawloms Posted October 5, 2022 Posted October 5, 2022 Wordle 466 MELTDOWN! It can't be, that's more than five letters!
6Foot2 Posted October 5, 2022 Author Posted October 5, 2022 It can't be, that's more than five letters! Crash, Grief, Havoc, Lapse, Wreck
clareq Posted October 5, 2022 Posted October 5, 2022 As it was a previous Wordle, and you can't go back, the word was USURP (just in case, highlight to read)
6Foot2 Posted November 9, 2022 Author Posted November 9, 2022 Link: Now Wordle has an editor in charge of picking the next answer - The Verge Wordle will now have its own dedicated editor to help make the hit guessing game word puzzles, The New York Times announced on Monday. Tracy Bennett will be the editor, and the game will have a word list curated by the NYT and “be programmed and tested” like its crosswords and the Spelling Bee game. The changes appear to mean that the NYT will be lining up some of its own solutions instead of relying on the long list of answers you could find if you knew where to look. However, it sounds like the game itself won’t be changing. “Wordle’s gameplay will stay the same, and answers will be drawn from the same basic dictionary of answer words, with some editorial adjustments to ensure that the game stays focused on vocabulary that’s fun, accessible, lively and varied,” Everdeen Mason, the NYT’s editorial director of games, wrote in an article about Bennett’s appointment...
Andrew_C Posted November 9, 2022 Posted November 9, 2022 The other day I played "SPELD" and was rather surprised that it was accepted....
mikeprice Posted November 9, 2022 Posted November 9, 2022 Played it for a few months then gave up was getting boring as the same tactic generally got the answer in 4-5 every time only failed once - even with my spelling!!!
sigma Posted November 9, 2022 Posted November 9, 2022 I'm still trying to get a clean sweep on Heardle Decades for 60's,70's,80's 80's No1's and 90's on the first few seconds. My best is 4 out of 5.

6Foot2 Posted December 1, 2022 Author Posted December 1, 2022 Link: How the Wordle editor is ruining wordle. [slate.com] Like many people’s, my brain wakes up after my body. I realize, doctors, that technically that may not be accurate. But as a 46-year-old with a toddler, I am often propelled from my bed at 6 a.m. (or, God forbid, before) with “Mommy, Mommy, Mommy, Mommygetup” and no room to lie still and savor the warm covers. My body is awake and moving around the apartment long before my brain has caught up. That’s where Wordle comes in. Once I have managed to sort the child—or, more likely, my husband has taken over—I like to slowly sip my morning tea while tapping the tiles (dark, hard mode). The ritual lets my mind adjust to the morning. I enjoy a tricky word—GLYPH, I see you. I find double consonants sort of irritating (FOGGY???). But mostly, I enjoy the random puzzle as a way to rev my consciousness and prepare for the day. When the New York Times announced, on November 7, that Wordle would have an editor, I didn’t give it much thought. How much could the mere presence of a person really change it? Oh, how naive I was! Four days later, I got my answer. And that answer was MEDAL. MEDAL? On November 11th? Wait a minute—was the Times punning with its Wordle on Veterans Day? Hmm. I was willing to chalk it up to a coincidence, until November 23rd, the day before Thanksgiving, one of the busiest travel days of the year … when DRIVE appeared. I tapped angrily on my phone, muttering to myself. And then, on the day of the holiday itself? FEAST. This—this was too much. My treasured mind awakener had gone soft. (Two days later came CLEAN. Harrumph.) Folks (FOLKS), I do not want a punny Wordle. Wordle should not be cutesy, or themed, or even ironic. Wordle should stay hard and weird. No hints! Especially no thematic hints! People on Twitter should post their scores, and we should be able to scoff privately. Haha, what a loser; it took him four guesses! When the word is FEAST, you then must wonder: Did he intentionally take four guesses so as not to appear lame?? Wordle’s very randomness is what makes it so great! It’s why thousands of people play. And, I’d wager, why the Times eagerly shelled out in the “low seven figures” for it. The ability to guess the Wordle based on context clues that would appeal to Andy Borowitz is soul-crushing. Or, at the very least, quite annoying. Look: I’m sure that Tracy Bennett, the Wordle editor, is a lovely person and a skilled crossword editor. But when I do a Wordle and discover I’ve walked into someone else’s pun, I feel foolish. The butt of a middlebrow dad joke. I want to tell Joe Kahn that the Times’ ever-expanding dominion should leave some room for serendipity and strangeness in the world. No more puns, I beg of you, Wordle queen. I now understand that you started your reign on November 7 with BEGIN. Please: It’s time to CEASE.
