andy_b Posted January 27, 2022 Posted January 27, 2022 (edited) elusive first letter Edited January 27, 2022 by andy_b
Ironside Posted January 27, 2022 Posted January 27, 2022 (edited) 6 guesses, Same issue as Andy, was struggling to find the right first letter, thank god there were only 3 valid options by that point lol Edited January 27, 2022 by Ironside 1
Jawloms Posted January 27, 2022 Posted January 27, 2022 Do some of us get different words, as the word I got as the answer today I believe only has two possible different first letters to make words? I'm playing at https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/ which I believe is the correct place as that's what was linked in the first post of the thread. Anyone want to PM me what they got and what they're first two guesses were?
Koldov Posted January 27, 2022 Posted January 27, 2022 (edited) the word I got as the answer today I believe only has two possible different first letters to make words?? Google says there are 3... One of them is a bit of an older English word though I'd say, not used much in modern language. Edited January 27, 2022 by Koldov 1
andy_b Posted January 27, 2022 Posted January 27, 2022 Google says there are 3... One of them is a bit of an older English word though I'd say, not used much in modern language. and oddly my first guess 1
Koldov Posted January 28, 2022 Posted January 28, 2022 I'm taking issue with the settings, in particular 'Hard Mode'... As you can see, I hadn't really woken up (or had the required 3 cups of coffee) before I did this and I forgot to use a 'revealed' letter from my 2nd guess in my 3rd guess... maybe I would have got it sooner if I had (so not really making it harder)...?
jthompson Posted January 28, 2022 Posted January 28, 2022 It means that you can't find letters by using words that you know won't be correct. It stretches your vocabulary a bit more, I reckon. 1
Koldov Posted January 28, 2022 Posted January 28, 2022 Good shout... why didn't I think of that?! EDIT: More coffee needed...
StevieM Posted January 28, 2022 Posted January 28, 2022 Using READY and PIOUS (or QUOIT) will reveal any vowels used. In hard mode, you couldn't use them both if a letter featured in one of them.
Ditto Posted January 28, 2022 Posted January 28, 2022 Pleased to get my first one in three steps just before midnight yesterday. Today's took 4 goes.
simonw Posted January 28, 2022 Posted January 28, 2022 Got it on the 4th line today. Only had to get the initial letter on the final attempt.
Norphy Posted January 29, 2022 Posted January 29, 2022 Easy one today I thought Wordle 224 3/6 [emoji833]🟨🟨[emoji833][emoji833] [emoji833]🟩🟩[emoji833][emoji833] 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

Koldov Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 [ATTACH=CONFIG]64392[/ATTACH] elusive first letter Unfortunately I find myself in the same predicament today... annoyingly I have somehow managed to get the first letter wrong and all the other 4 letters correct on my first go (bit of a fluke, but not outside the realms of possibility)! Now, I have 5 guesses left and (by my estimation) have 5 common words that could possibly be made by changing the first letter... so I could use up all my guesses for one letter...
Norphy Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 Got it on go 5 today Wordle 226 5/6 [emoji833]🟨[emoji833][emoji833][emoji833] 🟨[emoji833]🟨[emoji833]🟨 [emoji833][emoji833]🟨🟨[emoji833] 🟩🟩🟨[emoji833][emoji833] 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
free780 Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 Wordle 226 4/6 [emoji834][emoji834][emoji834][emoji834][emoji834] [emoji834]🟩[emoji834][emoji834][emoji834] [emoji834]🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 I was surprised how quick I got today's.
Koldov Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 Seems I got reasonably lucky in the end... No skill involved as I could just have easily guessed the wrong starting letter for the next 4 goes at least (and nothing to help me work out which one it could have been)...
6Foot2 Posted January 31, 2022 Author Posted January 31, 2022 Got one letter on the first guess. Casting around for more letters, I found another on the third guess, and hit the jackpot on the next guess. Mode: Hard.

[ATTACH=CONFIG]64446[/ATTACH] My strategy with this is not to use any of the four known letters and use as many of the possible first letters in the next guess, to narrow in on the missing letter. With a bit of luck, you could get it in 3 and a good chance in 4. It took me 4 goes today with no matches on go one. *** Saw your subsequent post *** Your strategy worked well too Edited January 31, 2022 by Ditto 1
Koldov Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 My strategy with this is not to use any of the four known letters and use as many of the possible first letters in the next guess I think we had this discussion a few posts back about me misunderstanding the whole point of 'Hard Mode'! Once in that mode you have to use the 'known' letters ('Any revealed hints must be used in subsequent guesses'). 1
Ditto Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 I think we had this discussion a few posts back about me misunderstanding the whole point of 'Hard Mode'! Once in that mode you have to use the 'known' letters ('Any revealed hints must be used in subsequent guesses'). Aha! I had not dug into hard mode but recall the topic being discussed - I don't need to now, I see what they are doing . It would suggest I'm not - so, the big question, should I change or not?
Koldov Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 Thing is, I didn't understand the point of that mode because I was subconsciously doing it myself anyway, as I wasn't typing in random words to find letters (it didn't occur to me and I didn't know that was a way to play it - I'd be too worried about using up all my guesses and not finding enough letters).
jthompson Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 Uhhh. It's been bought up by the NY Times. Seems like a 'nice while it lasted' sort of moment. I'm sure there'll be lots of imitators but the original is deceptively well executed.
