150 devices in 5 trolleys!

Hello - We have been asked to get 150 devices in 5 trolleys. I think we would look at Surface Go 3 (we have a working Intune environment). I imagine the Surface Go 2 is cheaper, but it seems crazy to buy an older model. We considered the ES Surface laptop but the keyboards would be so prone to vandalism, ping a few keys off and it’s properly broken? Probably not even buy surface Go keyboards due to cost.

 

Are there any clever charging solutions from Microsoft? We do have one LocknCharge trolley but it is a bit of a beast.

 

What are school buying nowadays?

I have introduced these to the company I work for:

iPad charging cabinet with secure storage for 10 iPads | zioxi

They look smart and have a locked section to the side where you put the chargers. They have a series of 4-5 port extension leads. There is a passthrough that leaves a small amount showing that plugs into teh device.

 

I would look at their high density offering:

I'm a big fan of the Dell / Ergotron kit as the users don't see any cables when you match the docking kit to the devices.

The biggest problem with the Surface range (at least the ones we have) is that M$ have used a bizarre multi way connector for charging as well as data etc. When I priced Lapsafe modifying our cabinet, the only way they could do it was to cut the cables off the wall-wart chargers. Much cheaper for me to build those chargers into the cabinet myself.

We have 40 Surface Go 2's in an Ergotron Zip40 Cart using the Surface power adaptors, but you can also charge via USB-C should you wish.

Hello - We have been asked to get 150 devices in 5 trolleys.

 

That's 30 devices per trolley. Depends on the exact dimensions of the device you're aiming to charge, but we have a couple of 15-shelf trolleys designed to take larger laptops that fit two smaller Chromebooks per shelf. Just make sure you can get charging cables down each side of each shelf, and that there's some way to cable-tie the cables neatly to the inside of the shelf.

 

For a couple of classrooms with lock-n-charge units, we've removed the tubs / racks that fit 10 devices and crammed in around 15 per unit. It can get a bit crowded in the top if you're trying to fit in a bunch of individual chaeging blocks, so better to get a proper multi-way USB charging device, but of course that would add a bit on to the cost.

I remember a long time ago (10 years or so..) I setup 25 laptops in a school, in a trolley.

 

That weekend the CCTV showed someone wheeling that entire trolley straight into the back of a van
