[mac software] New in School - Mac Licensing (Sibelius and Logic) - Where to Begin?

Morning all,

 

So I've taken over a position at a (really quite awesome) school having moved on to pastures new. Team awesome, staff great, seems great...

 

...and then Macs.

 

My predecessor dealt with everything to do with the Macs and has now left. Didn't leave much in terms of documentation and I myself am not a Mac person.

 

The music dept run Logic and Sibelius, and have two suites with Macs on happily running away. There is a Mac next to me in the IT office in need of Sibelius and Logic on it, but we have zero information on our licensing, and I myself have zero knowledge of Macs.

 

Managed to install Sibelius (hooray, go me) but it's asking for things. Not even tried installing Logic yet. Now I'm being asked for keys and things I don't know.

 

How do I even go about trying to find out what the school and site are licensed for, with whom, and how to, like, "put that" on this Mac next to me?

I'm in the same boat. Recently taken over a school with two Mac Suites (one for Creative Arts & one for Performing Arts). Got issues with our Logic Pro X software

 

Do you have info for your school Apple ID? Do you know if the school has setup Apple School Manager?

 

There, you'll find what apps the school has purchased.

I would assume you've gone through purchasing licensing via either Apple direct, or more likely a reseller like Stormfront (really wish they'd change their name), KRCS or Albion.

 

Your finance department should be able to pull up who you've purchased through. They would be the first port of call to me.

I don't know if we have a school Apple ID or indeed much of anything, but asking finance certainly a good bet!

Have you spotted Sibelius licence server on any of your windows servers. This should tell you how many concurrent licences you have if its setup this way. You may also be able to contact Avid, we have a logon with them which lists all our licences and subscriptions etc.

Good plan, and yes I did thanks. Or rather I think I did. Lost in chatbots and forum links to nothing like my issue and just emailed sales in the end hoping my request gets to a human.

In regards to Logic Pro licensing, is it liekly you have purchased this software in one of 2 ways;

 

a. In the days of Imaging Macs (which are dead) you would have bought however many licences you needed via Apple's VPP portal site, then used the 1st redemption code on the spreadsheet in the image you were creating for the Mac Suite.

 

b. If you are more up to date, where Macs are being managed via an MDM then those Logic licences, again purchased via Apple's VPP portal will be sitting in the MDM. If you need more licences then you can purchase VPP credit via an AAES Reseller, 3 of which were mentioned earlier.

With Sibelius there should really be a license server, might be worth checking a windows pc with Sibelius(if they have any) and that'll tell you the license server details if you can't find the server initially.

Look for the following file on a Mac with a working Sibelius install /Library/Application Support/Avid/Sibelius/_manuscript/LicenceServerInfo if it exists you have a licensing server and the contents should tell your the IP of it.

For macs, look up "Apple school manager" and "MDM". This makes administering Macs a doddle. Think "GPO and a store that actually work together properly". If you dont have ASM, get it sorted, then use apple configurator to get your macs into ASM. This is the only annoying part really.
