Currently they are using an old tablet for watching videos if we go somewhere in the car, but they are very slow as they are very old now. As they are getting to the age of using tech in school, I was thinking of getting a new tablet which they could use for playing some games etc (and also watch videos). Question is - The cheaper tablets I am seeing only have 2GB. This seems a little low considering my phone has 3GB and seems slow for me. I don't want to pay for something only for it to be so slow it needs replacing in 12 months. Are tablets able to run better with lower memory than a phone? What is the minimum I should be looking at?

Can't imagine it'll excel with games or other child friendly things. But yes, you are right - the cheap android market is a mess. 90% of them are very poorly spec'd. 1

The only Android based tablets that I'd even be close to considering would be the Samsung Galaxy Tabs or the Amazon Fire devices. Otherwise, I'd be going Chromebook now. 1

I think there still is a place for tablets (I keep mine in the bedroom) as it is a lot better on my eyes than a phone screen and I find small laptops a bit faffy consdering I have a decent work one. How old are your kids? We've just bought the Samsung A7 Lite for ours, same one referenced in the post above - currently £119 at Argos, John Lewis etc as part of Black Friday. Usually £150. It's a great little tablet. It has an octa-core processor, 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. It's not lightening quick of course, but more than adequate for the kids, and hugely faster than their old Fire tablet from a couple of years back. Ours are aged 4 and 6, so they are playing things like Cbeebies playtime island, various colouring games, TT rockstars, Numbots etc and it has no trouble with those. They always used to complain about the speed of the old tablet, but I've not heard any moans yet! I'm using the free version of Kaspersky Safe Kids to block/allow apps and websites and set time limits. 1

But most are very limited with 2GB and I can imagine that won't last well with children and their patience!! Seems it would be cheaper to buy a phone with better specs. Only thing a tablet offers is the bigger screen?
LeMarchand Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 I was looking for a tablet last Xmas and found the same thing: Lots had low specs at high prices when you look at what you can get in a £200 phone. Prices seem more sensible if you shop around this year, but I was given an old Samsung that works well enough for what I want (mainly eReader + Feedly) now that I've put Lineage OS on it.

You can get tablet Chromebooks now. I know Acer and Lenovo each make at least one. However, they seem very few and far between still. 1

I have some vouchers for a shop which has both. Both are priced the same and reviews seem similar for both. I just need to remember to get a case also as I don't really fancy them breaking it in the first few days!!

Have used the lenovo now a few times very nice tab. we use them as an alterntive in some of the schools managed on Intune. Great for a kid IMO. had some of the samsungs as well also very nice but usualy more costly and some complaints ive seen is the expandable memory on these can only be used for photos and files cant transfer apps over. 1

Beware, though, that it doesn't seem to have any OS updates, or at least I haven't received any in the 12 months I've had mine (despite there being an OTA app for checking). I have just bought a Samsung S7 FE and that is quite the best Android tablet I've ever used, brilliant display and very swift. It rivals my Surface Pro 7 for sheer usability.

The tablet seems quite good. Although they haven't been used for too long so it's a bit early to say. I haven't tried to link it to the echo we have, but it should be OK. I have google family link and setup accounts for the kids rather than use the in built function on the tablet. I'm not sure if there is any difference. If I get time I will try and connect it to the home hub I have and let you know.

penfold Posted April 13, 2022 Author Posted April 13, 2022 (edited) Has anyone managed to get a case for the Lenovo Tab M10 HD? I bought one, but it was the wrong size, I also went into a shop and got them to try the tablet in the shop with the tablet case being sold for this tablet. However, the case was about 1mm too big in width which resulted in the tablet not being held in place. I've also seen some reviews about tablet cases saying the same thing - the case was too big for the tablet. Are there 2 sizes for this tablet? I can't seem to find a definite answer for what I should be looking for. The cases are listed for Lenovo Tab M10 HD, but I don't see the actual measurements of the size of the tablet that can fit into it. Edit - OK, found something on Amazon. Unfortunately I can't order from there!! But at least I know it exists!! Edited April 13, 2022 by penfold
