Morning,

 

My post is aimed at the social media gurus out there. I'm probably opening a can of worms here. Just want to confirm in my head. We have a group in school that want to create an twitter and instagram account for this group. The teacher overseeing this wants over all control as to what is posted (being able to approve posts before being published) With it being linked to school.

 

Is there anything out there that can do this?

Personally I would not get involved. There is no need and you may one day become responsible for it.

Is the group students or other staff?

 

If the group is students then here that would be an absolutely not, only staff would be allowed to post. Whether that is just pupils composing the posts under the direct supervision of a member of staff who says 'yes post' or a post that is drafted in word or something and then composed by the staff, that's down to your SMT to decide.

 

Technically you could look into Hootsuite as that would allow simultaneous posts to all platforms, but it would come at a cost.

If you use office 365 and wanted to have some fun, you should be able to power automate a teacher approval and then automatic SM post. But I'd stick with "the teacher has the account".

Twitter is easy enough - we do this easily with a central account for us and the 6th form they do the same. Again though, it's staff managed. Instagram however, as it's part of Facebook is a slightly different kettle of fish - not sure if you can sign up to it separately to Facebook but if not, just avoid it like the plague as it's personal accounts linked to a page.

Stay well clear of this, Only specific SLT have access to SM sites I want no part of this. if you dont you will be receiving the can you put this on Twitter FB emails from random staff.

In my experience it's just a case of Teacher X creates an account and has the keys to it, IT don't get involved. As long as that teacher (or teachers) keep(s) the password safe, you should have nothing to worry about.

 

And if something gets posted that management take an issue with? That is NOT an IT issue. It's a disciplinary one. (Though, if needs be, keep in mind that you can always seize accounts by intercepting password reset emails)

 

Assist to the best of your abilities, with regards to "How do I...", "Do you know if it's possible to...", "Do you have any recommendations for..." etc as it is - reasonably speaking - something vaguely computer-y, but I'd recommend you damn well put your foot down if they start to indicate they want you to have operational control of it (be in charge of making posts/updates/etc). Social media. The clue is in the name. Social. Parents will use it to try and contact the school. That probably isn't on you to be dealing with.

Please also consider what happens if something goes wrong - i.e. the responsible member of staff gets hit by a bus. Make sure more than one person does have the ability to log on, reset the password etc.

always have the staff member use a school email address, preferably an alias that can be transferred to another user if they leave.

Cheers for the replies. Oh don't worry I'm going nowhere near it! It was more a is there tools out there to let the teacher manage the accounts in terms of what gets posted. Other than the teacher has reigns and the students send them what they want to post

Moot - that's just a line of enquiry no different to any other. You respond with the school's generic email address or a more specific one.

You would need a third party system, something like Hootsuite. You will be looking at paying the big bucks though I'm afraid.
