Giving parents access to logins with younger children

We're currently looking at the issue of giving parents login details for younger children and what other schools are doing.

 

So far, our AUP has been fairly restrictive - no sharing of login details is allowed, but this is unrealistic with younger children (EYFS, KS1 and early KS2).

 

What do you do in your schools regarding this? Do you have a different AUP for different age groups?

 

At the other end of the scale, what do you do about older children and Gillick competence?

For all pupils, we have lists by class of default passwords, i.e. an individual, generated, strong-ish, (hopefully) easy-to-remember password per child. For Years 3 and below we give the parents those default passwords if asked. Year 4 and above set their own passwords as part of the curriculum ICT session, probably one of their first lessons. There's nothing to stop any pupil changing their own password, so we do sometimes get puzzled parents trying to log in to their children's account and finding the password has changed.

Is it an 'issue'? I'm not sure what the issue would be for 99% of platforms...

 

I think it depends on the platform and what those login details entitle them to do?

 

Do their child's homework, chat to other children, see details of other children?

 

I posted about something similar (about letting parents log-in to see teacher videos on the child's Google Classroom), I think the general consensus is that it wasn't a good idea for that platform.

What is your usage case where parents would need their child's login details? Is this in school, for a web-based service, or issuing to parents on behalf of a child?

 

For EYFS to Y6 we issued all of our parents with their child's Google Classroom logins for remote learning, on the basis that they would be managing this on the child's behalf. As that era is passing, we are potentially looking at EYFS using GC as a method of sending things home, so child and parent would log on together.

 

As and when we have older children still going into isolation, we have been handing out their GC logins to parents as necessary. I'm not sure there's really anything the parent is going to see that they shouldn't.
