Backup hardware - What are you using?

Hi all,

 

Currently backing up about 12 VM's / 16TB daily (Veeam B&R) to a couple of QNAP TS412U NAS's. They're pretty terrible devices... poor LAN speed and awful disk speed.

 

They're due for replacement now and I'm just after some opinions on what you might be using as on-site backup hardware, whether it be NAS, iSCSI to a server... whatever.

 

 

Main requirement is much bigger disk capacity and I must improve the network speed so 10GbE is probably a must.

 

 

What do you run ?

we use Veeam and synology boxes... and some other NAS boxes as well...

 

For your awfull disc speed... and forgive the question...you haven't got SMR drives in the NAS, rather than CMR drives..? fell foul of this in a 4 drive NAS box at home. SMR drives in a raid situation are diabolical...

Veeam hosted on a HP Server and Synology NAS in a separate building

Using Synology for storing backsup and utilising their free software Active Business Sync to perform VM + file level backups.

Just having a rejig after swapping Hyper-V hosts so had to re-organise backups etc.

 

Since end of August, Old Backup had 26TB storage and is kept offline as it holding old backups prior to new servers going in - and was configured to copy the most recent week/month in a second location

 

New Refurb HP Gen8 has 48TB storage with a 10Gb SFP+ connection. - this is my only backup at present since end of August. - I know, no need to say anything!

 

Just about to set up another server for immutable backups to hold weekly/monthly secondary jobs. - Will be a another HP Gen8 in another location.

Not sure what the disks are. They're whatever populated the NAS when I bought it. Awful though. They're 4 x old 5400rpm SATA's, RAIDed.

 

Network is LACP dual 1GbE NIC's. Just not getting the throughput I need.

 

A very annoying thing about these QNAP's is when they fill up you lose the web interface, have to reboot, and hope you get to your files in time to delete something before it cuts the network again. Not good.

 

 

What kind of network speeds are you guys achieving in Veeam with Synology's ???

Anyone have 10GbE on those ?
