I should add that our staff do follow a name scheme for their usernames. When they change name through marriage or divorce (or gender, not had that yet) it's a bit of a game changing them across as I have to change it in AD, add it as the new email alias (so the old address stays as a proxy), change home folder name, change SIMS username and details in SIMS, then crawl our internal DB to re-match old and new (though HeidiSQL makes this easy enough).

I'd hate to have to do anything like this for the students too!

Almost everyone seems to be backwards to mine!

Students: FirstInitial|Surname|IntakeYear > JBloggs21 (current Year 7)

Staff: FirstInitial|Surname > JBloggs

Handled by Salamander, again using preferred forenames. Although from the sounds of it we will be having to change a few, leading to username/email changes due to changes in identity.

We have been fortunate that our trans students have chosen a name with the same initial, so our naming policy means they get the same username. I just change their display name as soon as I'm informed of the change.

Another reason why usernames might want to include a random/obscure component is that it forces staff to use directory lookups instead of assuming that students' email addresses can be typed out on the hoof.
