Sibrows Posted September 8, 2021 Posted September 8, 2021 Hi All, I can see lots of threads with people having similar issues but we're looking at rolling out large screens to replace projectors these don't have the freeze image function which is turning into more of a sticking point that I'd like. Is anyone aware of a device to sit inline with the HDMI input to achieve this? I'm aware of the option to extend the desktop but we're hoping to roll out Chromecasts to allow us to transition away from HDMI cables to the faceplates that seam to just get broken repeatedly. I fear I'm looking for something that doesn't exist but thought it was worth an ask. Thanks in advance. Simon
andy_b Posted September 8, 2021 Posted September 8, 2021 Probably better to just ensure the screens purchased have the functionality built in ? Anything else (if possible) seems to be adding a layer of complexity.
hallb15 Posted September 8, 2021 Posted September 8, 2021 Its one of the reasons we went for SMART panels - they all have the freeze functionality (although on the older remotes the button is labelled STILL)
DavR Posted September 8, 2021 Posted September 8, 2021 I'd never realised that freeze screen was such a big deal until we moved to interactive panels and we didn't know what button to press to do it. In retrospect it seems kinda obvious and fundamental. Unless you're getting an immense saving by getting this particular brand of screen, I'd also say switch for a brand that does have a freeze function. I'm surprised that there are brands that don't tbh.
chazzy2501 Posted September 8, 2021 Posted September 8, 2021 (edited) ask the manufacture if this function is possible. We purchased projectors many years ago that didn't have a freeze function which was a big problem. We talked to the manufacturer and it turned out that the DID have the function but you had to purchase a different remote! Just in case, look in the panels line up on their store and see if any of the other panels have the freeze function or if a replacement 3rd party remote has the feature. (as ours did) Or train teachers to use extend mode. EDIT: also sometimes some remotes have a custom button feature that can be mapped to freeze. (ala Viewsonic Projector!) StephenPink Posted September 8, 2021 Posted September 8, 2021 watching this with interest - I've started purchasing consumer grade 75 inch TVs for classrooms, as they can now be had for only £700. None of the enterprise/commercial grade stuff is anywhere close to that price, and a few have asked about the ability to freeze. Not the end of the world (so far) as most are happy and have had training on how to use them in extend instead, but I can see how some in the future may cause more fuss and struggle to cope with extend!
Sibrows Posted September 8, 2021 Author Posted September 8, 2021 Thanks all, as @steohenPink has said we're looking at consumer grade as the touch screen isn't needed and with a supplier like Richer Sounds prepared to include 6 year warranty in the £700 price tag some of the shortcomings and workarounds are worth consideration
BenQ_Royce Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 worth checking that the TV warranty covers commercial use amongst other exclusions, in all honesty there's a price gap between TV's and Interactive classroom screens for a reason, it's not that manufacturers are all rolling in extra profit, appreciate there's a cost gap but it's getting closer. We've built in tech like ClassroomCare especially around health benefits including eyesight that the consumer panel they watch TV on at home doesn't benefit from. It's worth weighing up the difference than just the upfront saving.

SamanthaD Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 I don't think there's one specific product that would only do this. However I've found that an annotator does live freezing, but includes a wealth of other functions that you wouldn't need or want to pay for. It really would be cheaper buying the panel that has this functionality built in rather than add it on afterwards - the annotator I found was £4.5k retail. So you could literally throw your existing screen in the (WEEE) bin and buy a new one cheaper than that!
