Harry1980 Posted July 31, 2021 Posted July 31, 2021 Hi All, We have just upgraded to Windows server 2019 which has 2 virtual servers. I am using an existing Buffalo NAS drive to do onsite backup. I have managed to back up the admin server using windows server backup without any issues. When I tried the same with the curriculum server I get an error message on windows server backup saying that the "The specified path is not a remote shared folder". When I try to navigate to the NAS drive using file explorer using its IP it gives me the following error message "Windows cannot access \\10.0.0.0 Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problem click diagnose. It gives an error code: 0x80004005 Unspecified error. I have try to ping the NAS drive and I get a response no packets lost. I have researched a little and it talks about SMBv1. Thanks in advance.
timbo343 Posted July 31, 2021 Posted July 31, 2021 (edited) Depending on the age of the buffalo NAS, some do not support SMBv2 so you have to enable SMBv1 client on the server however i must stress, that is a massive vulnerability. This did the rounds a good 6 years ago (?). We were using Buffalo NAS devicrs and made the switch to Synology as the Buffalos did not support SMBv2. Edited July 31, 2021 by timbo343
robyholmes Posted July 31, 2021 Posted July 31, 2021 Can you use ISCSI rather than a file share. It's the preferred method for Windows server backup anyway.
3s-gtech Posted July 31, 2021 Posted July 31, 2021 If the NAS is running SMBv1 I doubt it’ll have iSCSI capability. We junked every Buffalo NAS we had when this issue reared its head. I don’t miss them.
Cache Posted July 31, 2021 Posted July 31, 2021 The other thing it could be is the guest authentication - rather than browsing to the NAS can you map a drive directly to the share entering the credentials? https://neurotechnics.com/blog/solved-cannot-connect-to-an-smb2-network-share-form-windows-server-2019/
Harry1980 Posted August 3, 2021 Author Posted August 3, 2021 Hi All, It was the SMBv1 on the server. I had to add it then it started to work. I will have to buy a new NAS drive as the current one doesn't have the storage capacity. Any recommendation on NAS drive to buy? With regards

We have 2 and they 'just work'! Looking to get some 2bay ones which will be turned off and only used full weekly backups incase of a cyber attack. They have a neat little feature that enables you to download / backup your google data too (if you are a google school). 1
Davit2005 Posted August 3, 2021 Posted August 3, 2021 (edited) +1 There is a lot of good about the Synology. I have had 3 different models, always the plus versions. Currently got 2 of them at home for NAS, Backups, and a few small VMs on each. The DSM software makes use a doddle INMO. The CPUs may be behind other manufacturers for the price but the DSM software and the other things it offers such as Office365/Google local backups, Virtual Machines, HyperBackup make it worth it. Not saying they are without their problems but you'll prob find that with nearly all similar NAS units. Just follow security best practice and only allow what you need to allow i.e. if you do not need remote access to the NAS then do not enable it. Read some reviews etc. Edited August 3, 2021 by Davit2005
Harry1980 Posted December 8, 2021 Author Posted December 8, 2021 Hi All, I am looking to buy the Synology DiskStation DS220j 8TB (Seagate Ironwolf) 2 Bay. Is this a good NAZ drive? Would this allow me to do incremental backups? Thanks
Davit2005 Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 Hi All, I am looking to buy the Synology DiskStation DS220j 8TB (Seagate Ironwolf) 2 Bay. Is this a good NAZ drive? Would this allow me to do incremental backups? Thanks I'd go for the DS220+ to be honest but also consider a next plus version up that includes more bays. The simple reason being this will give you more options and you will no doubt end up using the synology for more. https://www.synology.com/en-us/products/compare/DS218play/DS220+/DS220j/DS720+ Compare the maximum amount of hosted files for instance plus the added RAM.

On the link it doesn't give the cost. I'm assuming that they are expensive. I'm having to jump over hoops to get the one above and its not that expensive. On the topic of backup, I've noticed that the backup is taking over 24 hrs to complete. The following days backup fail because the previous days backup is still running. I am using windows server backup software. On the old 2012 server it backed up fine. Shouldn't it be doing incremental backup. I am using server 2019. Is there any other free backup software that i can use to do incremental backup? It is backing up around 600GB.

That seems an awfully long time for 600gb. How are you presenting the backup drive? I seem to remember that shared drives / folders or non dedicated would be slower. For a synology NAS I would present the drive as iSCSI and it can appear as a local drive for WSB. I’d also consider other software such as Veeam for backup purposes.
round2it Posted December 15, 2021 Posted December 15, 2021 qnaps here works like a dream no issues since day one
Davit2005 Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 (edited) qnaps here works like a dream no issues since day one Yes jus remember to keep them isolated from the Internet Not saying Synology or others are perfect and have a clear track record but I'd always limit access and highly consider stopping it connecting to the Internet altogether.
