We had a Teams meeting last week where a group of students were giving a presentation to an external group of people.

We had the meeting reflected onto a TV, which meant that the other people on the meeting had a terrible echo as the webcam picks up the sound from the TV.

Is there anyway around this??

I've not actually used Teams for video conferencing, but I'm guessing that it handles background noise in a similar way to Zoom / Google Meet and attempts to cancel-out its own audio picked up from microphones. However, if there's a fair bit of latency between what the application thinks is going out and the actual audio going out it'll have difficulty processing - I'm guessing using screen casting / reflection is adding too much latency. Try connecting the screen directly via a physical HDMI (or VGA) cable to see if that sorts the problem.

Would muting the TV not have helped? Unmuting it when someone else is speaking and muting your mic? Or still have system audio going through the computer?
