jmcdermott Posted May 21, 2021 Posted May 21, 2021 (edited) Evening. You are going to want to backup the following directories: adsoft DOCSTORAGE Then you are going to want to transfer logons to the database and then backup the database, bellow is an example of a powershell command to achieve the goal but you will need to amend it to your configuration. Import-Module SQLPS -DisableNameChecking Invoke-Sqlcmd -ServerInstance sims\sims2019 -Username "sa" -Password SAPASSWORD -Query "exec sims.sims.db_p_transfer_login" Start-Sleep -s 30 cmd.exe /c "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SIMS2019\MSSQL\Binn\DbAttach.exe" /BACKUP /AUTO /SERVER=sims/sims2019 /DATABASE=SIMS /USER=sa /PASSWORD=SAPASSWORD /PATH=d:\SIMS.BAK You will need to edit all the underlined sections. Also if you have a good internet connection it would be a better option to upload an encrypted version of the backup to cloud storage Duplicati is a good free backup option which can do encrypted cloud incremental backups. aicrd Posted May 21, 2021 Posted May 21, 2021 Usually we'd run it on a VM and then backup the entire VM daily, both on prem and in a Backblaze B2 container. Has saved a lot of hassle in the past as instead of reinstalling SIMS on a new server and restoring the backups we can just restore the whole machine.
jmcdermott Posted May 21, 2021 Posted May 21, 2021 Backing up the VM is a must but in most ransom attacks it is possible the the backups can also be effected also.

Thanks A ransomware attack will probably encrypt all the attached disks so this won’t help you. You should be doing full backups of the server *and* SQL backups of the database to a proper backup device that isn’t attached/writeable directly from the server.
aicrd Posted May 21, 2021 Posted May 21, 2021 Backing up the VM is a must but in most ransom attacks it is possible the the backups can also be effected also. That's why we do Backblaze - Immutable backups.
jmcdermott Posted May 21, 2021 Posted May 21, 2021 Sorry aicrd no offence ment, agree with you totally, just reassuring local backup only is not a good idea.
chrisakak9 Posted May 21, 2021 Posted May 21, 2021 personall I would (veeam) backup backup my entire Sims server
aicrd Posted May 21, 2021 Posted May 21, 2021 Sorry aicrd no offence ment, agree with you totally, just reassuring local backup only is not a good idea. None taken at all But yes, ideally you'd want a local + cloud and if you cant do immutable then an offline backup method (Such as tape) will save you from ransomware.
paulellam Posted May 23, 2021 Posted May 23, 2021 Full backup daily here with one off site from the day before, plus Office manager backs the DB to encrypted hdd daily.
