Pound symbol in Joomla

Does anyone know why my £ symbols will not save and show on webpage when editing content? It makes no difference whether I use keyboard input or insert symbol from jce editor, when you click save or apply, it makes no difference. Refresh and clearing history has no effect either. This is the only outstanding issue I have before this site goes 'live'.

Are you editing using the wysiwyg editor? if so, try clicking html and entering £ where you need it.

Try going to the source and adding £ where you want the pound symbol to be?

Tried that too ( it didn't work. Also tried from front end instead of CP, made no difference.

Just a thought... Could it be the character set of you database?

I dont have access to the server it sits on I can only upload files to it via ftp.
