Device Identification

Currently rolling chromebooks out to the pupils and I'm wondering how people are marking / identifying individuals devices.

 

If I label them with stickers they will get picked off? If I etch them will I void the warranty ? Would permanent marker work ?

 

So how do you lot do it ?

We just use stickers on the bottom near the serial number info etc. this allows us to use a barcode scanner for quickly scan them if necessary. We don't get too many picked off but it does happen, it's not the end of the world though as we can always just replace the sticker. We also register the asset ID/assigned student in the device admin, as well as in our asset management system.

 

If you need the asset ID, you can also turn on the chromebook and press Alt+V on the login screen, it'll show you the ID in the top right corner.

 

I personally hate the look of acid etched equipment so would never do it - but it shouldn't affect your warranty.

I have found that sticky labels work fine.

There are also the tape version that you get with brother printers.

 

They will all come off eventually - they will be picked at.

We have sticky label asset tags. They're flimsy things that can be picked at, but, they don't peel off.

 

I also write the device name on the case with a silver paint pen for ease of identification. This can wear off but is fairly durable.

I've never had a problem with warranty and etching, but as they have internal SNs I just put a sticker and microdots on them now

We use stickers and a TA in the building that the trolley is in, is responsible for replacing stickers and reporting any issues to us.

 

Works well since we came back from lockdown.

I just use asset stickers. Some do get peeled off, sure, but we have the devices logged against individuals, so we can find it by their name as well as the ID. Or there's the serial number as well.

School name and asset number etched onto the base, asset label on the lid for convenience (Brother label printer). The asset number is also added to the device in device management (Alt+V is a good tip, I didn't know that one).
