One of mine is a MS school, but will probably soon need Google access for area collaboration reasons.

Anyone done this? I'm guessing that we'd have to register a secondary domain for Google or can @myschool addresses work with either?

As above.

It's a while since I set it up, but you can register both to a single domain. Set the DNS records appropriate to your needs - we had mail on O365 and our website was built in Google sites, so mix and match is fine.

I'd highly recommend setting up AD Connect (assuming you're using on-site AD for account management). It'll then auto provision accounts in Google Workspace and authenticate against Azure AD. (This is free and straightforward to set up. The only complication I encountered was for users who already had Google Workspace accounts.)

Alternatively, you can use Google authentication to create Azure AD accounts (free) which can be configured to create on premises/hybrid AD accounts (requires paid services), but that seemed more complicated to me and you probably already have on premises AD.

You can use both on the same domain. You just need to run with one or the other for email, really. You can do both, but its needlessly complicated.

You're definitely going to need a teaching and learning policy regarding what tools should be used. You can't sensibly run teaching and learning by having half the departments on Classroom and half on Teams. As a school you need to pick a platform and stick to it. Half waying it won't work. Students will lose all track of what they're supposed to be doing.

I set up both before anyone else in my school had heard of cloud computing. If the school hasn't set up either yet and you're trying to decide, you could set up both so that staff could have a look.

google and o365 can now sync together making the setup to google relatively easily now. Google for education is free needs to be setup with admin email and gives access to all the google apps, it worked really well at my last place
