Who looks after .sch.uk domains?

Our school .sch.uk domain stopped working a while back, I thought I'd try and get it resolved.

 

Does anyone know who to contact regarding the domain, who manages them?

We're an Essex school so is it someone at Essex I need to contact?

 

Any help would be appreciated?

Do a whois query here: https://www.nominet.uk/whois/ It'll tell you who the registrar is.

If you struggle you can get Nominet to handover control of the domain to you - they have a process that involves a signed letter from the head teacher.

I believe Nominet is the registrar for all the .sch.uk domains. You can send them a letter signed by the head teacher to get management access to it which then provides access to sign post to the nameservers you want to use (Nominet doesn't provide a DNS service for the domain). In my experience with Norfolk LEA schools, it's been the county council who have provided DNS services for the domains. As a MAT we took over full management of this and migrated it to our own DNS servers.

Just ask them whether their automated systems/routines (especially billing) are setup to handle .sch.uk domains beforehand.

Yup. The school owns the domain.

 

You may have two issues:

 

1. US-based companies (or at least their helldesks) often need a tutorial on how UK schools DNS works (school.region.sch.uk) or they'll assume your domain name is region.sch.uk and break things. Doubly so if they're automatically generating certs.
   
2. Registrar automated billing / domain expiry systems may not handle "costs nothing / never expires" well, with knock-on effects in cPanel / Plesk / etc.

Krystal can handle .sch.uk domains and will do the DNS for free. We’ve a number of schools transferred to them via Nominet.

I've transferred a bunch of .sch.uk domains to Heart Internet with no issues. Their DNS management interface is good too.
