Papercut on Mobile Devices

Hello, we run Papercut MF. We have just started introducing Intune managed Windows laptops, these devices are sometimes onsite on the schools wireless network, and sometimes at home. Users sign in with their school UN/PW in the form [email protected].

 

I want to allow printing to the schools printers from these devices at least when onsite, when offsite it’s not so important. I am getting confused with what PaperCut solution to use:

• print deploy

• mobility print

• cloud print

 

I’ve tried Print Deploy, there's an Intune deploy option, but it seems to need a load of rules opening to allow the printers installing on clients, SMB, browsing to our servers etc, so Cloud Print seems to be ideal option (at least its name indicates that) but it works on invite links? These laptops are in a loan set, any one of 1500 students could pick it up, invites are not going to work.

 

what solution should we use?

Adding more confusion to the mix, there's this too (but universal print in intune is currently in preview with possible extra licence fees when it exits preview). This looks like a good option for offsite printing though.

Don't have experience with intune but we have setup mobility print for a sen student here and it seems to work well.

Are these domain joined laptops, if so just map the printer via GPO. If not MobilityPrint providing they are on your network will be what you need.

We use Mobility Print for Staff and Pupils personal devices and GPO for domain.

 

Looking into Universal Print soon as we use Intune in the hope we can push printers out this way instead of GPO

Cloud Mobility Print for the win. Hopefully iOS support soon.

Universal Print is not in preview any more, went general availability recently. It's included in the A3 licence but you only get a limited amount of print jobs per month per licence (5, but pooled between all users) so it's whether (number-of-A3-licences * 5) is enough print jobs per month for all your users combined.

 

I wrote a post on it back when it was in preview: https://katystech.blog/2021/01/universal-print and I've got one planned for when PaperCut v21 is released specifically about PaperCut/Universal Print integration. (It's possible now but it's a lot of faff as you need Azure AD DS, which is not the same as Azure AD and costs extra. If you try and trick it by using local AD DS you need the first half of your UPNs to be identical to your sAMAccountName or it won't work. In v21 they are moving to Graph API for syncing user accounts)

We set up Web print in papercut and it works well for non-domain mobile devices. As the end user UI is web based it's almost completely device agnostic, but will only work on-site.

Papercut mobility print is easy and simple to setup and deploy and should do the job.

FYI You can make Web Print work offsite, over a public URL, as we have that setup. However we're now moving over to using Cloud Mobility Print, once it's released for iOS.
