Danp Posted March 16, 2021 Posted March 16, 2021 Anyone running a screen outdoors? I'm looking at fitting something over Easter ready for summer term. Maybe a 55" screen inside a unit like this and have a Chrome device or Pi connected to it to run notices etc.
3s-gtech Posted March 16, 2021 Posted March 16, 2021 You’ll find that s standard TV will be badly affected by condensation outside, even enclosed. They also need to be exceptionally bright. I think you’ll need a proper outdoor screen or a LED matrix unit.

No chance of having it installed in the building but in a window which can be seen from outside? You see this with a lot of shops etc. Afraid not, old building with sash windows.

I wouldn't trust that they'd be fine. Temperature changes alone wouldn't be great for it - Does the enclosure have some kind of dehumidifier system in, even if its a little drawer for a decent sized pack of silica gel to go in? Plus like has been previously said, unless it's continually in the shade and the enclosure has UV protection too, they need to be exceptionally bright.

Yes, it will be in the shade for most of the year, only in late June & early July it could be in direct sun during the middle of the day. But, as it's main purpose is for parents to see at pick up time this should be fine. The enclosure does have an air flow system as well as heater system if needed. I don't think I need the A/C unit!

I'd be more worried about security than the actual screen being damaged, and how you plan on getting content to it as you wouldn't be able to sneak a content player behind it! We use Samsung digital signage screens and haven't been let down yet (only indoors though) so I'd be happy going with that product. The enclosure I wouldn't be too confident about though, usual caveats about consumer equipment in a professional setting not being covered under warranty apply.

A consumer TV will be nowhere near bright enough, usually less than 350 cd/m². I've installed some of these outside and they hold up fine even with direct sunlight. They're 2500 cd/m²!
