dead ipads, any value left?

getting ipads back that refuse to charge / switch on

these are from a batch of mini 2's 32GB wifi, over 6 years old.

 

just get battery symbol, red line with lightning cable symbol on black screen.

 

I'm guessing the batteries have finally died ?

 

Is that about average for ipad batteries ?

 

Thinking not worth replacing batteries but is there any value to be had ? e.g. trade in

or will I just have to recycle as WEEE for free?

How long did you leave them plugged in? They do that when they are totally flat for a while until they've got a bit of charge in them.

Still got me iPad2, had it around 8 years easy. I'd say it has been on/in use or charging easily constantly through that time.

 

Just leave it on charge for a few hours and put it to one side, nothing to lose.

 

UPDATE: Is that the bigger charger, not the smaller iPhone charger?

yes official ipad charger, left on all night still no charge. they have had a lot of use.

Also we had one actually expand last year (the battery), pushing screen out so am

thinking they are coming to end of life. I suppose 6 years is pretty good.

 

Given they are stuck on ios 12 and age I don't think its worth replacing batteries but

do they have any residual value or is it just a case of WEEE ?

I sent my ipad air gen1's to millgate and collection, repair and delivery was £46 +VAT + Delivery each. (£70 each all in) This was cheaper than buying them. Do you still have a use for them?

It could be the batteries have given out, but they'll almost always turn on whilst connected to power even if the battery no longer holds a charge.

Could be worth cleaning out the lightning connectors with a paperclip/pin and trying again. It's amazing how dust builds up in there!

 

Otherwise I'd say its worth swapping the batteries out if you can. It's cheap - roughly a tenner per battery - but time-consuming, taking around an hour once you're up to speed.

New batteries will give the old iPads a new lease of life and you may be able to find use for them (my kids did almost all their home learning on a pair of old iPad Mini 2 16GB).

If not then you'll have increased their value should you decide to get rid

Still running iPads that are stuck on ios 10.1 i think, won't go any further, they were bought in Feb 2013, they are just used as a glorified cameras.

 

Won't buy them again if I have anything to say about it.

That's nothing to do with Apple, most resellers work with a recycling partner nowadays.

It's usually a thid party, not Apple.

The most you'll get for an iPad Mini 2 is likely free recycling. There isn't value in them. Working condition you'd get maybe £20/£30 at most?
