Which CPU for Home PC

Looking to refresh PC and with all the new CPU's out there I admit I've havent a clue as to which would be the best one to choose.

 

Mainly going to be running Hyper-V VMs, Photoshop, some video editting and the now and again gaming.

 

So...... AMD Ryzen or Intel 10th Gen?

I'm gonna guess everyone is going to say "Ryzen" here (supposedly better performance for the price, or lower price for the equivalent performance, vs Intel) but... I still prefer Intel

Value wise the Ryzen 5600x is pretty hard to beat at the moment, if a little tricky to get stock of.

Ryzen I'd say,

 

All the cores, great for workstation activities and gaming too!

My Ryzen 5-3600X is still great and holds it own for games and video work.

 

From the current gen you probably want to look at the 5600X or the 5800X depending on whether you want 6C/12T or 8C/16T.

Ryzen. With the core counts, fantastic performance per clock and the platform of Ryzen 5*** (or Zen 3) it's a great platform. You can't go far wrong with either, but I like the fact that Intel are getting a kicking after so many years of resting on minor increments and cynical segmentation.

Right now, don't. Stock is scarce, and when it is available, the pricing is inflated.

 

Really, I'd be looking at a 5900x with that kind of workload

Are you using onboard video or a video card? I bought my son an Intel 10100F which is a quick i3 processor and serves him very well but it doesn't support onboard video so you have to have a card. He has a GTX 1660S and comfortably plays 4k games in high settings.

Yes, speaking of Intel you can save a bit with the "F" series if you don't want onboard video. My current PC is Intel i7-10700F, 16GB RAM, RTX3060ti but you could probably get the same performance for less with Ryzen if there's stock available.

Hey I've got a reputation of "Intel Intel Intel" to keep up, but at the same time I'm being nice and saying AMD probably cheaper

Difficult stock wise for just the components however it's worth looking at whole systems if you have the money for now (or credit) particularly if needing a graphics card too. For example, you'll often find the processor & GPU in a prebuilt system you need, swipe the parts you want for your PC, replace with cheaper & better available parts and resell the prebuilt.

Not sure if it's still the case, but it did get to a point where pre-built systems cost less than the sum of the components at retail due to bulk discounts etc. It meant that you could get a machine built, with warranty, for a decent saving over the kit.

I did an upgrade from 4th gen core i7 to a ryzel 3600X system, sold my old cpu mobo and ram seperately on ebay and covered the cost of the upgrade!

 

If you have an old system to upgrade, it might be worth taking a look at what those components are selling for.

I've seen this too! Even 2nd gen i7's are selling for much more than they did 12 months ago - not sure if the same for i5s? Also, GPUs equally crazy - I have a couple of GT 1030's that I picked up for around £30 a while back - they're selling for £60+. I bought a new EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti for the kids PC at the back end of 2016, some used are selling for the same now.

It seems to be that many people stuck at home are looking to upgrade their existing computer by purchasing a better main component rather than replacing the whole thing for greater outlay.

 

Motherboard went to italy where it replaced a dead Z97 board and resurrected a gaming rig.

4790K went to liverpool where it replaced an i5 4570

RAM went to germany for almost as much as you could buy it new, where it was to upgrade a machine using non-overclocked DDR3.

 

All in I made over £400 on those three parts and before ebay fees I'd earned more from the sales than I'd spent on a ryzen 3600X, X570 Mobo and set of speedy DDR4.

 

If I'd sold the three together I'd probably have struggled to make £300.

My tuppenceworth is that SSD and RAM will give you better performance gains than the last gasp latest CPU.

 

Go for Samsung 970 NVMe M.2 SSD and lots of RAM and watch it fly.

Probably going slightly off thread, but I'll risk it . I have bought and sold a couple of items overseas on ebays global program - all well and good. I fear the fully Brexit situation will put a spanner in that!

I managed to get him an as new RX580 8GB for £130 from eBya. Due to lockdown confusion, they sent me a second card and rather than have me return it, offered to sell it me cheap. I got that one for £115, again, in an as new condition. I think they were standby cards for miners as they had never been used.

I put in a Ryzen 3200G (I paid £82 for that) and replaced it with a 2600 from Aliexpress for £81 a coupel of months later. The 3200G is now going for upto £110 used on eBay!

I would highly recommend looking at Aliexpress for a used Ryzen if availability is short in the UK, then upgrading later once stock has gone back up and prices have come down.
