Which laptop for SIMS backup with long battery life?

Hi,

 

Considering a backup SIMS laptop which would give us access to contact numbers in an emergency - ie. evacuation.

 

So looking for something with medium grunt but excellent battery life.

 

Any reccommendations?

Does this mean you will be installing the SIMS server on the laptop as a backup?

If so, you need to look at the secuirty on the laptop as you certainly don't want that to be nocked from the back of a car.

You would really need to look at drive encryption and really lock it down.

The laptop will be stored under lock and key in my office - with the option to kensington lock it to something. You would need a BIOS password to start it up, a logon to get on to the pc and then a SIMS username and password.

The laptop would only need to leave my office under emergency conditions.

 

..and yes I am installing full SIMS on the laptop.

I would suggest you look at DELL Latitude range with removable media drives. You can pull out the optical drive and insert a media bay battery which will extend the duration. On light use applications (Office, web etc with a little bit of multimedia) we can get a whole school day use out of them, not sure how long it would last running SIMS.net though

How often will you update the database on the laptop? It sounds a lot of work and expense for very little benefit personally.

Yep we will be doing the same shortly. Another school in the area managed to get the sims server to de-attaché the database make a copy on the laptop and attaché it onto the sims install on the laptop, during the night. The laptop has a full server version if sims and it works a treat apparently.

I would plan to do it weekly....

 

I agree it does sound like a pain....but so does paying house and car insurance...

 

I think the school feels it could be a worthwhile contingency to have.

 

It does also mean that if the live SIMS goes t*ts up we do still have access to data.

I've just purchased some HP 6715s laptops with the optional 12 cell battery pack. It fits to the bottom and charges through the normal power connection. I got 14 hours out of one the other day! Admittedly it was not in constant use all day long but the screen was always on and I kept doing random things on it.
