Is the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U any good for a pupil laptop?

Hi all, I normally go with intel processors (never had an AMD) but willing to mix things up a bit. I have been offered some new laptops with an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor but have nothing (real world) to base it against.

 

I have read up on the processor and it looks ok, it's obviously not the best or anything, but I wondered if there are any Edugeekers that have used them and can give me a little feedback.

Far better than most of our desktops or laptops. Very capable processor. AMD Ryzen chips are currently dominating Intel.

Slightly faster than the i7-4770 in my current work desktop, and about 5 times as fast as the cpu in the gov provided laptops!

Definitely suitable. I always used to be on the Intel bandwagon but the AMD Ryzen chips are incredibly good for value, performance and power usage.

 

Would definitely prefer to have (current gen) laptops with AMD procs vs Intel procs.

 

(I might be biased as I've just upgraded from an i5-7600K to a Ryzen 5 5600X in my home PC...)

Reasons to buy Intel atm = You like the colour blue

Reasons to buy AMD = Literally everything else

 

I'd kill to have the 3500u in my work laptop!

So I have literally just found out I can get a similar laptop for the same price but with this processor - 11th Generation Intel® Core™ i3-1115G4 Processor (6MB Cache, up to 4.1 GHz)

 

Normally I would go with the intel but reading these posts I'm not sure

Definitely. The AMD CPU has twice the core and thread count.

Depends on the workload and software, it used to be that most software wouldn't go above 4 threads, as intel in their wisdom decided no one needed more than 4 outside of servers so software developers didn't write it for use of more than 4. Till AMD came around and did an Oprah and gave everyone cores.

 

Most modern software will make use more multiple cores, high end software such as Premiere Pro etc will make use of most of them if not all. I have a 8 core 16 thread and PP uses it all!
