Setting up Restricted access for students in YouTube

Hi

 

Any Google Admin/Youtube experts out there who could help me set up Restricted access for YouTube?

 

YouTube is currently blocked for students in school. With remote learning and students in school completing the same work as those at home it's causing issues as staff are setting YouTube videos.

 

I can see in the Google Admin console that you can set up restricted access for an OU and allow teachers to post 'allowed' videos. Can anyone help me with this, or point me to a nice step by step guide? I've never done and a little wary of allowing everything!

Once signed in they get whatever settings you've applied. Allowing a video doesn't let you search for it, so have to be linked.

 

However restricting access when not logged in to youtube is the issue, at school you can alter dns to slightly restrict videos

When you say linked, just a link on Show My Homework, or Google Classroom, etc?

yes, a direct link to the video is fine, just not an instruction to go search for it

I was about to post a similar question, so I'll jump on here...

 

YT currently blocked for students via firewall. Could obviously unblock it, but for non-Chromebook/Google schools I'm assuming that there's nothing to stop them watching whatever they want as they won't be signed in? Or has someone got a way to force an automatic sign in to YT?

 

Ignore the last part! No Google Workspace, so can't use the controls!

Easy enough to sign up for GSuite and sync your users, or use M365 to auth them.

If using Chrome browser you can enforce this via GPO also. We do this incase anybody isn't signed into a Google account. (Then our Admin panel settings take over).

Thanks, but we already have the ability to set restricted etc via the firewall. The current block is partially for those reasons, but also for time-wasting ones. The ability for teachers to effectively whitelist the ones they are using would be the ideal situation.

Thanks, but I think it's looking like the way to do it is sell my soul to Google as well as MS. I could possibly whitelist certain URLs via the firewall, but don't fancy adding that extra workload as the calls would be pretty constant!

 

Basically this site is O365 with no Google Workspace, but lots of "challenging" pupils. It would be ideal if we could block YT access apart from vids the teachers want them to see, preferably without them needing to email me to do it.

Sorry i assumed you were a Google site. We can do exactly what you are asking with a mixture of GPOs/Google Admin Panel and FW settings...... but we have definitely sold our soul the Google...... but never looked back

Thats the point, you apply the restrited mode to lock it down when not logged in.

 

then it uses whatever settings you have configured in gsutie for logged in accounts. set your teachers OU to be able to whitelist and kids to whichever restriction level you want
